Here’s a question on staff communications and digital platforms. So we’ve recently switched our in-house staff comms platform to Viva Engage, and we’ve set up some communities on there, and invited staff to suggest communities that they’d like to be part of. We’re a very widely dispersed charity - just under 400 staff - but with nearly everyone working in small teams - mostly in prisons or embedded with probation or part of multi agency partnerships - and a central team who are hybrid working. We’re working at around 100 different locations so we have to work hard to nurture a sense of one organisation, one team-one dream. Our staff are smart and amazing - but they’re mostly hired for their values and sense of vocation amd people skills - not for their abilities with social media or digital comms platforms. And they’re mostly on their feet, moving around, suppotprting people, rather than staring at screens. I wonder whether there are people who’ve done this ‘journey’ and can share any tips or words of wisdom? How do we encourage staff who don’t sit at a desk all day, or take their phones to work, to try out an online platform they’re not familiar with? And once they are on, how do we make it worth their while to keep using it? And to feel confident to contribute and share their know how (which is immense) with one another? We’re doing ok, but we’ve not yet reached the ‘tipping point’ where it just becomes the thing everyone does. Though to be fair, we’ve only been getting used to it for a couple of months. But I’m keen to create a great online space for staff to get benefit from and naturally impatient… Anyway - any staff comms gurus out there? I’d welcome any insights or suggestions?

Few Lessons learned as a Public Relations and Communications Officer at Instacash Eswatini during the recently ended Hhohho FA cup tournament, include the importance of grassroots engagement, where face-to-face interactions are crucial for effective communication and addressing individual concerns. Financial literacy cannot simply be disseminated through advertisements but requires a personal approach tailored to each community. Additionally, storytelling plays a vital role in fostering understanding and resonance, as narratives of struggles and triumphs resonate with audiences and cultivate a sense of ownership over financial futures. The experience of traveling to various locales in the Hhohho region has provided valuable insights into the power of communication and human connection in promoting financial inclusion. By immersing oneself in the daily lives of individuals at the grassroots level, one gains a broader perspective on the impact of financial services on different communities and the importance of tailoring messaging to local cultures. - Active listening is crucial for engagement and helps build trust and rapport. - Tailoring initiatives based on community feedback improves effectiveness. - Collaboration with communities positions Instacash Eswatini as a supportive ally in financial inclusion. - Adaptability in communication strategies is essential due to varying demographics and cultural norms. - Using visual aids and respecting traditional practices enhances messaging and inclusivity. - Grassroots connectivity, storytelling, listening, and adaptability are central to successful outreach. - Insights from these experiences will guide future strategies for advocating financial inclusion in diverse communities.

Hiring a communications professional is a good call for your district and here's why: The work of school communications has to be done. It’s nonnegotiable. Just think what would happen if your district suddenly went dark on social media, stopped sending out any updates, and quit responding to incoming messages from families or the media. Your community’s trust in your schools would implode overnight. Whatever your district’s financial situation, you have to keep communicating; the question is on whose shoulders that massive responsibility will fall.
