🎁 As we step into December, with the holidays are right around the corner, I wanted to wrap up the year (no pun intended) by sharing some facts about myself and CatSci Ltd. To keep with the holiday theme, I've crafted a "Did You Know?" Advent Calendar series, featuring brief facts providing some insight into my role, my team, and all things CatSci. The Advent Calendar tradition of opening only one door at a time can sometimes be hard to follow (for me at least), so, these posts will open up more than one door at a time revealing more facts! Feel free to send me a message with any questions, and remember to check back in tomorrow for "Did You Know" Day 4 & 5! 🌟 In case you missed a fact: Day 1- My role involves supporting customers on the east coast of the US and in Ontario, Canada. -> Our business development team contains 4 members in North America. This includes Jas Douville (Head of Business Development - North America), Ivor Smajlagic, Ph.D. (US -West Coast), Jenny Wallis (Massachusetts and the UK) and myself (US- East Coast). Day 2- I operate fully remote from Windsor, Ontario, Canada! -> CatSci’s headquarters is located in Cardiff, UK and because of this I work fully remote from my home office in Windsor, Ontario. Being in the same time zone as my customers helps me support them when they need it most. I also get to travel to meet customers and attend conferences and tradeshows. Always great to meet customers in person! Day 3- CatSci has two UK sites, one in Cardiff, Wales and the other in Dagenham, England. -> Our Cardiff site contains laboratories dedicated to the non-clinical development of small molecule therapeutics as well as oligonucleotides. BIO International Convention 2024 is just around the corner. This candid shot from a decade ago (i.e., 2014) was at mbhb’s (McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP) hopping reception in San Diego. The young female professional pictured here paid her own way from Canada to network for a job and to learn about the industry firsthand; she was so impressive that I hired her on the spot. She went on to have a very solid tenure at Kymanox. I hope to see you June 3-6 in San Diego, California USA with Scott Arra, Nathan Blazei, and Lisa Yargeau: (1) The real lasting value of BIO is networking; everything else is transactional and has a much shorter shelf life. Just one (1) quality connection can provide ample Return On Investment (ROI) (NOTE: Matt Neighoff suggests five (5) is the right target number if you are a business development professional). (2) You must take some risk and put yourself out there. No risks, no rewards. If a random international engineering grad with zero work or industry experience and who never attended BIO before can land a permanent, full-time job at the event, you are probably aiming too low with your goals. (3) Go make the stories you can tell and share a decade from now!

Why It Matters:

Thank you for the opportunity to share my journey in entrepreneurship! I had a full table each session and shared my love of LaunchNet Bob Sopko GiveBackHack and Seachange. I also shared with the grad students and postdocs some of the big takeaways I took from my time at CWRU. 1) Get involved with the Postdoc Association and Grad student organizations and get experience in different board settings, including things like Faculty Senate. That helps you prepare for being in those board rooms as you move up in your career. 2) You are learning how to fail and pivot and keep going. Everyday is a new opportunity to try again. 3) Create your own opportunities. I curated an event called Postdocs on the State capitol just so we could go to Columbus and get the experience of talking to our local legislature. Those connections and experiences help me still today. 4) You may not see the end product, but you know you made an impact...however small...along the way. 5) If you stick to your values, you'll know what you need to do and how to stay true to yourself. I love what I am doing and am grateful for all my experiences in grad school, my postdoc, and as an entrepreneur. It also doesn't hurt that I almost died 3 times last year so I don't really have the same level of worry as others on the small stuff.
