The Power of AI in Music: A Double-Edged Sword. We've seen this recently with the lawsuits against AI platforms Sudo and Udio. AI is making significant strides in the music industry, offering both exciting possibilities and unique challenges. Let's delve into this from both consumer and industry perspectives. 🎧 For Consumers: 👉 Personalized Playlists: AI algorithms curate playlists based on listening habits, introducing users to new music tailored to their tastes. Spotify has already introduced this...but for me, it's pretty hit and miss. 👉 Non-musical people can get a taste of creating music. For me, the hope would be that this taste will actually get them to pick up an instrument or learn to play/create something more manually. 👉 Privacy Concerns: The data required for personalized experiences can raise privacy issues, as users' listening habits and preferences are tracked. 👉 Homogenization of Music: Over-reliance on algorithms might lead to a homogenized music landscape, where popular styles dominate, stifling diversity. We've already seen this with tracks being tailored to TikTok algorithms for example. 🎸 For the Industry: 👉 Efficient Production and collaboration: AI can assist in music production, from generating new compositions to mastering tracks, saving time and resources for artists and producers. 👉 Data-Driven Insights: AI provides valuable analytics on listener behavior, helping artists and labels make informed decisions about marketing and distribution. 👉 Ethical Issues: The use of AI in creating music raises questions about authorship and originality, challenging traditional notions of creativity and intellectual property. The above just scratches the surface of what's to come. For me, this is a new era for music, just like when streaming entered the market. We're yet to know the long-term effects but both industry and consumers should remember the people behind the music and make sure that artists are fairly compensated this time around. It’s been a busy week for music tech! 🔥 Business Insider highlighted Highnote on a list of music tech startups to watch amid the AI creator explosion** 💰 Suno raised a $125M round for its text-to-music model, following recent unveilings from Google, ElevenLabs, and Adobe. Make no mistake: there are glaring questions about the technology, its development, and its impact on creative professionals, just as there are in the broader AI landscape. As builders, we must critically examine these issues while maintaining a spirit of artist-centered optimism. So what's it all mean? Here's my take, and and how I lead Highnote: 1️⃣ If executed responsibly, AI will dramatically expand the already deceptively colossal market of people who create audio. 2️⃣ If executed responsibly, AI will not replace, but rather greatly enhance artists' creative power and play a helpful role in the creative iteration process. 3️⃣ As a result, there will be ~ a ton ~ more people making more music for more personal and professional applications than ever before. This will occur across a rapidly and intentionally widening array of creation environments which will naturally drive demand for collaboration layers that help creators and their collaborators—who will increasingly span hobby, prosumer, and professional levels—manage, store, version, discuss, and iterate on audio content. ** https://lnkd.in/eueEjhAk

As with most things in AI, a week can bring complete shifts in market leaders and available tech. Last week I pointed everyone to Suno as the best quality AI music generator. Well, they’ve been bested in some respects by Udio. Each seems to be better at certain tasks, but impressive nonetheless. Notable that Udio (which is free to use for now) says they are focused on “growing a community” moreso than adding new and more nuanced features. That’s because that community is a big part of their leverage, knowing they are going to be challenged legally. That is the real race here (see classic Silicon Valley mantras like “forgiveness not permission”, “move fast, break things”, etc). If you can build a market while the legalities are being navigated, at least some traditional players (labels, artists, etc) will begrudgingly come onboard to take their piece of the pie. No doubt this rings familiar to anyone in the music industry. And these AI models are growing communities. Some people are going the influencer route and using the generated music to build up Instagram channels around a theme, selling merch, etc. Not monetizing the (in this case) un-copyrightable music directly, but building brands. Actually not too different from many traditional music artists these days, if you overlook the source of the content. Look up the NSFW “Obscurist Vinyl” Insta account as one example, though be prepared. I do believe the companies I’m referencing here are ingesting music carte blanche under the guise of fair use, which has yet to be legislated on. And there’s multiple ways that could play out. But neither shaking our fists or putting our heads in sand will change the fact that it’s been done, it’s in the hands of the general public, and the quality (including the quirkiness) is good enough to create engaging, funny, weird, and yes, even sometimes moving content. Same as with generative video and images—impressive stuff. How will it be used? What impact will it have? Here's a snapshot of the evolving landscape: 🚀 Startups Galore: Countless startups & projects have emerged, harnessing the power of AI Generative Music. This revolution is making it easier for companies to license and use fresh music in their videos and products. Some projects include but are not limited to... - Kits.AI - Meta's Music Gen - Splash.AI - Google's MusicLM 🎤 DIY Music Making: Consumers are no longer just passive listeners. With advanced vocal models, many are swapping their recorded vocals with those of famous artists, crafting unique tracks in the process. Many of which are circulating within Discord communities. 🎬 Echoes of Hollywood: Remember the writer strikes in Hollywood? The music industry might be on the brink of similar conflicts. As AI Generative models gain traction, writers and producers face potential challenges to their roles, much like screenwriters did. A recent partnership between YouTube and Universal Music Group aims to develop AI music tools with protections for artists and rightsholders. This collaboration underscores the industry's commitment to balancing innovation with artist rights. However, this also might mark a weird 'dystopian' music industry as major labels and tech giants dominate the space, taking back the shares that the merging independent sectors have earned within the past few years.
