The BIG EAST Conference is formally unveiling its new six-year media-rights pacts with Fox Sports, TNT Sports, and NBC Sports, approved by school presidents. Sources noted a moderate rights fee uptick from the existing 12-year, $500M deal. Fox retains its lead TV partner position, airing 80 games each season across Fox, FS1, and FS2. Warner Bros. Discovery will air 65 games across TNT, TBS, truTV, and Max. NBC Sports will broadcast 60 games each season, with Peacock streaming starting this fall. The new deal significantly boosts women's sports coverage, tripling the number of televised women's hoops games and including complete coverage of the Big East Women's Basketball Tournament. Looking back to my days at the ALSD and The National Sports Forum, there is one question that seems to be asked of every sports exec who speaks, “What keeps you up at night?” Sometimes it’s fun to put yourself in those shoes and this article from The Washington Post did that for me… As someone who spends most of their day tracking sports development projects as a part of our Legacy Programs, here is what keeps me up at night. While excitement continues to build with what the The Washington Post outlines as the forecasted 4th distinct era of sports venues here in America, my question is how will this impact the future of sports fans and fanatic loyalty? How will the fan experience change as fans see relocation used as leverage for funding? Do boycotts like what is happening in Oakland become more prevalent? Do we see emerging leagues like the UFL gain traction? While the A’s are receiving most of the media attention, we also see the St. Louis Battlehawks setting the UFL record with over 40k fans against the Arlington Renegades just years after the Rams moved to Los Angeles. Are modern fans loyal to teams, cities, specific players… or is the presumed feeling of loyalty diminishing? This conversation is taking place all over the country and in all major sports leagues. This new era of stadiums will inevitably be the most expensive projects in the history of this industry, but how do we solidify the past, present and future of our industry's fanbases? Will the fanatic loyalty of sports outlast the political tensions surrounding our stadiums? How is the idea of “Leaving a Legacy” going to be viewed as our industry continues to adapt?

The money is flowing in sports. Several acquisitions/raises were announced this week: • Greenfly closed a $14 million round • Centre Court Capital closed a $42 million fund • Miach Orthopaedics, Inc. closed a $20 million round • Arctos closed a $4.1 billion round • Liberty Media acquired Dorna Sports for around $4.5 billion • Silver Lake acquired Endeavor for around $13 billion It's cool to see how much the sports tech and sports business ecosystem has exploded over the past several years. The unsustainable model created by the early entrants is nothing to be proud of. If you look at the past six years, some of those so called household names are piling on about a billion a year in losses. It may work for certain commercial product sales, but not in sports betting because operators compete with players that sometimes are better that the operator, competitors themselves, and regulators in order to follow the rules. From a business 101 perspective, a 6 billion accumulated loss is going to be difficult to dig out of for two main reasons at least, 1) your investors will start demanding recovery, and 2) there will always be the challenge of a continuing influx of new competitors small and large that have a solid profitable international base that can support a new market entry. There will be either consolidation or a big failure in the U.S. soon that will raise the alarms. Mark this!! Success in this extraordinary U.S. market will come to those that bide time and enter strategically with a proprietary platform that functions effectively, efficiently and actually knows how to trade a sports bet at a profit. That’s been the most difficult concept for us to get across. So we’ll take it one rung at a time.

Anticipations suggest that almost $3 billion will be placed on bets during March Madness by Americans. The athletic calendar is approaching one of its most anticipated events: March Madness. Consider Booger McFarland’s reaction to Damar Hamlin’s frightening collapse in a The Athletic article in January 2023. “We break bones, we get surgeries, we get concussions,” McFarland said on the air. “As football players, we are conditioned to deal with those things. That’s part of our game. When you bring CPR out, you are trying to help someone breathe. You are talking life or death now. That’s totally different than anything I am used to seeing on the field.” The same article states, “You want thoughtful people on air. You want people who don’t speculate. You want people with basic humanity.” And McFarland was able to embody those principles during a trying time. I have had the privilege of working with Booger, and he was kind enough to share with me that one of the things I helped him with the most was learning to communicate authentically. I could not be more proud of all of his success and how he handled this situation. He spoke from the heart, and that's the magic. His ability to stay genuine allowed him to connect with the audience, and he handled an incredibly difficult situation with poise and finesse. Pocket-lint’s Roger Fingas reports on the controversy surrounding Venu Sports. He describes the situation as such: "Three US politicians -- Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT), as well as Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) -- are calling on law enforcement to investigate. Venu Sports, a streaming service created by Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. The venture is due to launch this fall, and will include popular sports channels such as ESPN and TNT. That risks a monopoly in US sports broadcasting, the politicians say..." Venu could be poised to control more than 80% of nationally broadcast sports and more than half of all national sports content.
