*Call for experts* - Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Economic and Commercial Determinants of Health - deadline 7 July We need you! In the sidelines of the WHA, I am delighted to share that WHO is establishing a Technical Advisory Group on the Economic and Commercial Determinants of Health (CDOH) and the call for experts is now open. The TAG will act as an advisory body to WHO to support our work on the economic and commercial determinants of health: (1) support Member States in protecting against public health harms arising from CDOH and safeguarding the public sector from conflicts of interest, while also leveraging the potential of the commercial sector for improving health and health equity; (2) support Member States in addressing the upstream economic enablers and incentives of health-harming and health-promoting commercial practices. The TAG will: 👉 Provide independent evaluation of the scientific technical and strategic aspects of the economic and commercial determinants of health; 👉 Recommend priorities within the Organization and/or relevant technical unit and/or in this area; 👉 Advise WHO on planned activities and approaches within this area; 👉 Advise WHO on the implementation of the economic and commercial determinants aspects of WHA74.16 Resolution on the Social Determinants of Health.; and 👉 Review and make recommendations to WHO on frameworks and approaches for the measurement and evaluation of the economic and commercial determinants. Universal health coverage is everyone's business (just like WHO wrote in 2007 in its health systems Framework for Action), and this paper written by colleagues Téa Collins, Svetlana Axelrod, Luke Allen, Sara Bennett, Rifat Atun, and others makes a strong articulation of comprehensive UHC. A comment I recently wrote highlights the power of risk pooling to finance ambitious public health objectives (https://shorturl.at/mGUZ5), and the Disease Control Priorities has made a strong case promoting intersectoral policies as critical to UHC. In a book chapter recently commissioned by Sameen Siddiqi on the topic, Ala Alwan, Dean Jamison, and I write that "UHC [is] a consolidated response to bridge the gap between what a health system should be doing and what it does." All health systems aspire to effectiveness, responsiveness, equity, and efficiency, and UHC+ is the mechanism for doing so. Sustainable Financing 💰    ↳ Investing in health systems to ensure resilience and responsiveness.    ↳ Promoting innovative financing mechanisms to support health initiatives. 4. Global Cooperation 🤝    ↳ Strengthening international partnerships to tackle global health challenges.    ↳ Sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices, as well as ensuring access to the latest healthcare innovations, in terms of both treatments and diagnostics. Upcoming Event: The 77th World Health Assembly (WHA) will bring together ministers of health and other governmental leaders from its 194 Member States, alongside other dignitaries and experts. The Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 27 May – 1 June 2024. The theme of this year’s Health Assembly is: All for Health, Health for All. Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly Update 🌍✨ The first-ever resolution on social participation for primary health care has been approved by Member States. This is a significant milestone that empowers people, communities, and civil society to have a stronger voice in shaping decisions that impact their health and well-being. The resolution is a crucial step in addressing health inequities and rebuilding trust in health systems, especially in the face of unprecedented challenges like climate change, conflicts, and pandemic threats. 🤝🌱 Research has shown the transformative power of social participation in fostering trust, advancing equity, and aligning healthcare with people's lived experiences. By engaging in two-way dialogues between governments and the communities they serve, we can develop health policies, strategies, and services that are more responsive to the needs of vulnerable and marginalised populations. 🗣️💡 The implementation of this resolution will involve establishing regular and sustained participatory mechanisms such as dialogues and consultations, ensuring policies reflect the recommendations generated from these processes. 🤝📋 As patient advocates, we celebrate this progress and are determined to make a real difference in promoting social participation for better health outcomes. We highly recommend reading this insightful op-ed from our colleagues on re-positioning public health in the Pandemic Agreement negotiations. They emphasize the need for a people-centered approach, prioritizing equity, community engagement, and the strengthening of health systems. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant health disparities driven by social, economic, and environmental factors. To address these, the authors call for integrating social determinants of health into pandemic preparedness and response plans. They highlight the importance of community engagement in designing and implementing health strategies, ensuring interventions are culturally appropriate and supported by those they aim to help. Additionally, they argue for increased investment in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, and supply chain resilience to strengthen health systems.
