#NYSCDiary During an interactive session at the NYSC orientation camp, I had the privilege of representing my platoon to discuss the topic "Overcoming Obstacles to Achieve Goals, Cultural Experiences, Challenges Faced in University, and Role Models" with Angel of Platoon 5 from Rivers state and Ana of Platoon 7 from Edo State. One of the key questions posed to me was how to overcome biases, particularly those rooted in cultural or racial differences in an environment like NYSC camp. I believe that the root cause of any form of bias is a fundamental lack of respect for the individual. Before any bias can be acted upon, there must first be a reduction. The perpetrator must reduce the person to a limited part of their identity, whether it be their tribe, race, or gender. This reduction process strips away the person's complexity, education, experience, value and humanity, allowing the biased individual to justify their prejudiced behavior. I've witnessed how people behave or treat others poorly simply because they do not share the same tribal background. However, I contend that the issue is not truly about tribal differences. The real problem is the lack of proper evaluation and dignity for what man is. Those who harbor biases fail to see others as whole, multifaceted beings. Hence the solution to overcoming biases lies in adopting a holistic view of people. We must recognize that a person's tribe or gender is just one aspect of their identity, something they have no control over and cannot change. Man is multifaceted, and our identities are shaped by a multitude of factors beyond our control. In many instances, those who exhibit bias are often confused and inconsistent in their behavior. When faced with a problem, their focus shifts to finding a solution rather than clinging to their prejudices. This inconsistency highlights the superficial nature of their biases. By viewing people as whole beings and respecting their inherent dignity, we can overcome biases and foster a more inclusive and respectful society. We must strive to see beyond superficial differences and appreciate the richness and complexity of each individual's identity. Only then can we truly overcome the obstacles of bias and build a community based on mutual respect and understanding. #NYSCDiary #OvercomingBias #CulturalExperiences #RespectHumanity #InclusiveSociety #Leadership #FocusOnPeople #HolisticView #NYSC #DeltaState #Iamdaniel
