Meet Murphy Alum, Quinnyata Bellows from the North Shore Country Day School Class of 2015. During her time at DMSF, Quinnyata participated in Affinity Groups and held a Walgreens Corporate Internship. Today, she works as a freelance producer and costume manager. Let’s hear what advice she has to share! 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛I learned that staying connected with my community and creating connections that last a life time can benefit me more than any fleeting moments. The people I have met through Daniel Murphy have influenced me in a number of ways. So many doors have opened for me that I never thought I would have access to because of volunteers and staff that have reached out to me during and after my scholarship program. It would be an understatement to say that I have gained a number of mentors that have paved a way for someone like me to flourish in the arts and make a career out of something that was just my passion and curiosity at the time. 💙Why was receiving a good education so important to you? 💛The older I get the more impactful my education history has been for me. With every decision I make, the skills and ability to navigate through society were just basic lessons taught to me through programming and courses dedicated to ensuring my success in the past. I may not have fully understood the weight of an amazing education in my teenage years but seeing how things could have been more troubling for me now makes me all the more grateful for the opportunities I had. This ever changing appreciation for my education is what makes it so important. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛Take advantage of everything. This seems like a simple task but I think at a young age it’s easy to look past the small details but every thing that comes your way is a potential door that can opened and explored. Whether that is introducing yourself to someone new or being the first to volunteer, there is absolutely nothing unavailable to you unless you believe it. Thank you for being an inspiration, Quinnyata! #35YearsOfMurphyScholars #AlumniThen&Now #HighSchoolScholarship #EducationAccess

Bruce MacLellan has been such a strong advocate for paid internships that his leadership (and the leadership of a few other enlightened PR leaders) has created a sea change in this area. Most of my students now find paid internships. This wasn't the case five years ago. I fully support the occasional unpaid learning opportunity. A good example is is an agency that recently asked us if we could find a few student volunteers to help them stuff gift bags and set up for an event. In return, the students would get some beauty products. This was a great opportunity for my students -- one afternoon, and they get a behind the scenes look at how a big event comes together. And, importantly, it was optional. No one had to go. (For the record -- there were more than enough volunteers in a few short minutes after the email went out.) Internships, on the other hand, are not optional. Students need to complete an internship to graduate. And I don't know any students who can afford to work an entire summer for free. The students we send out on internship are close to graduation and come with some useful skills. And yes, the time they spend interning is a vital part of their education. What they learn in a real workplace simply cannot be taught in a classroom, no matter how hard we try. I would like to sincerely thank all the employers who take on interns. I know you have to spend time mentoring and teaching them. I appreciate what you do so much -- they are very different people after just a few short months with you! If we want a strong industry filled with smart, creative people, we need to create space for them. Paid internships are one way to create those spaces. I am very grateful that so many employers realize this, and are providing amazing paid opportunities.
Our CPRS members Bruce MacLellan, APR, FCPRS and Adnan Bashir wrote this piece last year for the Toronto Star, outlining the importance of paid internships in the #publicrelations industry, and their invaluable role in not only enriching our profession but also expanding the #talent pipeline. Later this month, I will be starting a teaching internship one night a week at a local college as part of my Capstone before earning my graduate degree next Spring. I am fond of the quote "It is never too late to become who you might have been". This post includes 7 lessons for a happy life for people aged 60+. Some of the lessons include embracing new experiences, staying in the game, and viewing endings as beginnings. If you are a boomer or love one, check this out. https://lnkd.in/dThQBZ23

Navigating the journey to an undergraduate degree is complex, especially for first-generation students. At the Whitman School of Management, we recognize these challenges and are committed to providing tailored support through our Whitman First Program.🎓 With the surge in first-generation enrollment, up from 12% to 19% in just one year, our program aims to foster a sense of belonging and provide essential mentorship. Lindsay Quilty, our Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs, highlights the importance of this initiative: "Whitman is committed to student success, and being able to tailor the Whitman First Program, specifically to help our first-year students thrive in the business school environment, is important for the Whitman School." Our program pairs first-generation students with faculty or staff mentors who understand their journey firsthand. The Whitman First Program strategically addresses key challenges with formal sessions on financial awareness, internship opportunities, classroom technology and more. Through these initiatives, we not only affirm that it's okay to seek support but also equip our students with the skills, confidence and resources they need to succeed in academia and beyond. We're proud to be part of the movement to support first-generation students in their pursuit of higher education. Let’s unite in celebrating diversity, empowering our students and building a brighter future together.🌟 #FirstGenSuccess Read more of the article here: https://lnkd.in/enmWATrD

LaunchGVL is a partnership of Greenville Chamber and Greenville County Schools. This work-based learning (WBL) internship program provides internship experiences for high school juniors and seniors. Hollingsworth works to increase opportunities for paid WBL experiences as a way to increase the percentage of students graduating from high school who are prepared for college or career. The goal of WBL opportunities is to cultivate the development of a skilled workforce and a responsive workforce system that meets the needs of business and industry leading to sustainable growth, economic prosperity, and global competitiveness. Students who participate in WBL experiences are more likely to gain postsecondary credentials and labor market rewards in high-demand fields than students who do not participate. LaunchGVL’s student application deadline is coming up January 19.
