Meet Murphy Alum, Quinnyata Bellows from the North Shore Country Day School Class of 2015. During her time at DMSF, Quinnyata participated in Affinity Groups and held a Walgreens Corporate Internship. Today, she works as a freelance producer and costume manager. Let’s hear what advice she has to share! 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛I learned that staying connected with my community and creating connections that last a life time can benefit me more than any fleeting moments. The people I have met through Daniel Murphy have influenced me in a number of ways. So many doors have opened for me that I never thought I would have access to because of volunteers and staff that have reached out to me during and after my scholarship program. It would be an understatement to say that I have gained a number of mentors that have paved a way for someone like me to flourish in the arts and make a career out of something that was just my passion and curiosity at the time. 💙Why was receiving a good education so important to you? 💛The older I get the more impactful my education history has been for me. With every decision I make, the skills and ability to navigate through society were just basic lessons taught to me through programming and courses dedicated to ensuring my success in the past. I may not have fully understood the weight of an amazing education in my teenage years but seeing how things could have been more troubling for me now makes me all the more grateful for the opportunities I had. This ever changing appreciation for my education is what makes it so important. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛Take advantage of everything. This seems like a simple task but I think at a young age it’s easy to look past the small details but every thing that comes your way is a potential door that can opened and explored. Whether that is introducing yourself to someone new or being the first to volunteer, there is absolutely nothing unavailable to you unless you believe it. Thank you for being an inspiration, Quinnyata! #35YearsOfMurphyScholars #AlumniThen&Now #HighSchoolScholarship #EducationAccess

🌟 Hard Work and the Power of Perseverance🌟 As I reflect on my life journey, I appreciate the diverse experiences that shaped who I am today. From flipping burgers at McDonald's 🍔 to sharpening blades in a lawnmower shop, each job while attending college taught me something invaluable. 🚧 A memory that stands out is digging a ditch by the highway near the lawnmower shop I worked at. I remember taking a break, only to have old high school friends drive by. One of them yelled, “Hey college boy, dig that ditch.” That moment, though small, was a reminder of the path I had chosen - one of hard work and perseverance. At the time I did not think that and wished my parents were rich so I did not have to work while in college. Specially outside in the heat. 🎓 This journey wasn't just about earning a degree; it was about proving something to myself and others. I was the first in my family to graduate from college, a decision initially met with skepticism even from my dad, who later became one of my biggest supporters. Here are some key takeaways from my experiences: 1. 📚 Every Job is a Learning Opportunity: Whether it's customer service at a fast-food restaurant or work in a hot greenhouse, every job teaches you something - like patience, precision, or people skills. 2. 💪 Resilience is Key: Facing skepticism or ridicule is tough. But it builds resilience and a deeper understanding of your purpose and goals. 3. 🌟 Appreciate the Journey: The path to achieving your dreams may not be glamorous, but it’s the small challenging steps that shape your character and journey. 4. 👥 Never Underestimate the Power of Support: From naysayers to supporters, the people around you shape your journey in unexpected ways. Embrace criticism and encouragement - they both have a role to play. 📣 To anyone out there juggling multiple jobs and studies, remember this - your hard work is not unnoticed. Your journey is unique and valuable. Keep pushing forward, and don't forget to take pride in every step of your journey. #HardWork #Perseverance #CareerJourney #CollegeLife #InspirationalStories #interns #internship #earlycareer #college

Bruce MacLellan has been such a strong advocate for paid internships that his leadership (and the leadership of a few other enlightened PR leaders) has created a sea change in this area. Most of my students now find paid internships. This wasn't the case five years ago. I fully support the occasional unpaid learning opportunity. A good example is is an agency that recently asked us if we could find a few student volunteers to help them stuff gift bags and set up for an event. In return, the students would get some beauty products. This was a great opportunity for my students -- one afternoon, and they get a behind the scenes look at how a big event comes together. And, importantly, it was optional. No one had to go. (For the record -- there were more than enough volunteers in a few short minutes after the email went out.) Internships, on the other hand, are not optional. Students need to complete an internship to graduate. And I don't know any students who can afford to work an entire summer for free. The students we send out on internship are close to graduation and come with some useful skills. And yes, the time they spend interning is a vital part of their education. What they learn in a real workplace simply cannot be taught in a classroom, no matter how hard we try. I would like to sincerely thank all the employers who take on interns. I know you have to spend time mentoring and teaching them. I appreciate what you do so much -- they are very different people after just a few short months with you! If we want a strong industry filled with smart, creative people, we need to create space for them. Paid internships are one way to create those spaces. I am very grateful that so many employers realize this, and are providing amazing paid opportunities.
Our CPRS members Bruce MacLellan, APR, FCPRS and Adnan Bashir wrote this piece last year for the Toronto Star, outlining the importance of paid internships in the #publicrelations industry, and their invaluable role in not only enriching our profession but also expanding the #talent pipeline. The goal of WBL opportunities is to cultivate the development of a skilled workforce and a responsive workforce system that meets the needs of business and industry leading to sustainable growth, economic prosperity, and global competitiveness. Students who participate in WBL experiences are more likely to gain postsecondary credentials and labor market rewards in high-demand fields than students who do not participate. Later this month, I will be starting a teaching internship one night a week at a local college as part of my Capstone before earning my graduate degree next Spring. I am fond of the quote "It is never too late to become who you might have been". This post includes 7 lessons for a happy life for people aged 60+. Some of the lessons include embracing new experiences, staying in the game, and viewing endings as beginnings. CEO @ The Savoy Group, LLC | Passionate Organizational Development Professional inspiring leaders and teams to activate empathy and compassion at work.
Thank you to all of the employers and government organizations hosting summer interns, program participants, and mentees. We know that you are serving as a mentor, role model, nurturer, parental figure in some cases, career counselor, and most importantly, a listener. As you support our youth and young adults this summer, know that they may reach out to you for support throughout the year. In some instances, you may be their only support within reach. Whether you believe it or not, what you represent and who you are (even when you are still developing) is more of a witness to greatness than you think. Know that you are a model of success, a model of courage, and a model of encouragement to those learning in the summer employment programming spaces. Keep walking with your head high and be unapologetically committed to supporting each of them. They deserve our best and to know when even we have to reset. Allow them to see the real side of work, how culture strengthens relationships, and how leaders grow when they support every part of the organization. Let them see you.

We just wrapped up another great internship with the addition of Luke Brassard to our team this summer. Luke, a graduate of St Sebastian school, is getting ready to start his sophomore year at Holy Cross. The way Luke came across our company is pretty interesting. He originally applied for an internship at the Needham Town Departments, but unfortunately, they didn't have any openings. However, someone from the town suggested him to me, sharing his resume and saying he might be a good fit. The rest is history, as they say. During the three months of the internship, what can we expect from interns? What can we teach them? I think there's a great opportunity to pass on some important lessons. In the end, it's up to the interns themselves to analyze, soak up, and put these teachings into practice. For me personally, I prioritize the following things: 1. Accountability - getting tasks done quickly and efficiently. 2. Resourcefulness - figuring out creative solutions. 3. Planning - like I always say, "proper planning prevents poor performance." 4. Relentlessness - the determination to finish tasks, no matter what obstacles come up. Luke has consistently shown these qualities since day one, earning the respect of our whole team in no time. On behalf of the entire Catalyst Team, we want to thank Luke for his valuable contributions, and we wish him all the best in the upcoming school year. #summerinternship #realestate #careergoals #bostonma
