Energy markets update from Flagship Energy: Six of the ten nuclear reactors in the UK experienced unplanned or scheduled outages earlier this week. SMR as source of clean power supply is a hype prevalent for data centers in US. However none of these SMRs have been commissioned and operating to date. The last order for SMR has also been scrapped due to delays and cost overruns. Because of small sizes, SMRs are costing nearly 3-4 times the conventional nuclear power reactors and nearly 4-5 times per MW of renewable sources. Besides ofcourse being plagued by conventional safety, environmental & proliferation concerns which persist to add additional burdens on costs.. As per the latest reports, the ‘diseconomy of scale’ was demonstrated by the now-terminated proposal to build six NuScale Power SMRs (77 megawatts each) in Idaho in the United States.

The cost of building seven reactors under Peter Dutton’s nuclear proposal could be up to $600 billion and “at best” deliver just 3.7 per cent of Australia’s energy mix in 2050, an industry body says. The coalition has pledged to build the nuclear reactors across five states on the sites of coal-fired power stations if it wins government at the next election. On May 9, the Center on Global Energy Policy held a virtual roundtable to discuss nuclear reactor permitting reform and the environmental reviews by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The event focused on whether the US permitting system could be a bottleneck to achieving #NetZero greenhouse gas emissions, given the need for hundreds of gigawatts of low-carbon energy resources. The Biden administration is failing on energy policy. Step one should be ensuring reliable baseload power. America’s energy demand is increasing while the Biden Admin retires reliable generation. We must continue to produce American energy through new technologies, natural gas, and bipartisan legislation like my Atomic Energy Advancement Act to prepare for America’s nuclear renaissance.
