That's not just for those of us directly Operating in (or into) the the US Market. The US Economy is a major influence on the world economy - it represents roughly one fifth of worldwide GDP and in prominent in virtually every global market, accounting for roughly 10% of global trade flows. Positive news across the pond can only be a good thing for all markets, including for us here in the UK.

Wow! - What a week! This week we've had a cracking week connecting with a number of new customers who have all come our way through referrals. It's always so pleasing to see the power of word-of-mouth in action, especially like one of the examples this week when the referral comes from one our clients' client! - That tells me we are getting a lot right! King’s Speech 2024: A New Dawn for the UK Jobs Market? Yesterday’s King’s Speech by the Labour government signalled rapid changes ahead for the UK employment landscape. Here are my key takeaways: 🔍 Economic Growth & Opportunities: The Labour government’s focus on bolstering economic growth is promising. This emphasis should create new opportunities for skilled freelancers and contractors in IT and other key sectors. 🌿 Investment in Technology & Green Skills: The drive for more investment in new technology and the green skills agenda is expected to boost the flexible workforce. Contractors thrive in agile environments, and these initiatives could be a significant win for the market. ⚖️ Worker Rights Reform: The announcement of the Employment Rights Bill aims to ban exploitative zero-hours contracts and introduce 'day one' worker rights. This reform is touted as the most significant in a generation, potentially ending exploitative practices like ‘fire-rehire.’ 🏛️ Fair Work Agency: The creation of the Fair Work Agency is a welcome move to uphold new legislation and ensure appropriate employment rights. Collaboration with contractors and industry bodies will be crucial for its success. 💡 Skills, Training & Immigration: Establishing Skills England and reforming the Apprenticeship Levy to create a Growth and Skills Levy are steps in the right direction. However, the highly skilled contract market needs additional support. Including agency workers and the self-employed in these initiatives would be beneficial. 🌍 Global Workforce Mobility: Plans to improve trade and investment relationships with the EU should include skills and labour migration deals. A short-term visa for highly skilled independent workers could help fill immediate skills gaps in the UK. 👀 IR35/OPW Rules: While no immediate reforms to IR35 were mentioned, the Labour party’s pledge to consult on employment status could open up opportunities to revisit these rules. The political landscape is changing rapidly, and there are both challenges and opportunities ahead for the contractor market. 🔴⚽️ England vs Switzerland: A Turning Point? ⚽️🔴 There’s a lot of talk about there being a real likelihood of England losing to Switzerland this Saturday. Everyone’s been saying it (myself included TBH!). It's fair to say England have not played well at all in the Euros so far. They are disjointed; individuals are way below par, they are not operating as a team, and on the face of it they lack desire and belief! On the whole, they’ve been outplayed by much weaker teams. However, like anything in life, when the chips are down, and backs are against the wall, it’s those moments when the winning mentality needs to shine through more than ever. Lets hope that is the case on Saturday! I am lucky enough that in our Business, I get to work with a fantastic team that regularly displays those qualities that make winners in Business (which lets face it are exactly the same as those that make winners in Sport) – A focus on relationships, relentless persistence, constant innovation, individual flair, great communication, dogged determination, unwavering belief, teamwork, and team members displaying leadership behaviours (not just the 'leaders'). This Saturday, despite everything that has gone on so far in the tournament, they (and we) need to believe that the team can turn it round and deliver! It's going to take someone to step up and be the catalyst (even if it isn't Gareth!), but it could be a turning point for the England team! However, if I was pushed to narrow this down to some key fundamentals every recruiter should focus on to ensure sustainable growth, they would be: ► Strategy - Have a Plan and Be Prepared That It Will Evolve Over Time A well-defined strategy is the cornerstone of any successful business. For recruiters, this means: Setting Clear Objectives what does success looks like for your business? Are you aiming to increase your client base, expand into new markets or sectors or grow your contract book? – Clearly define what are your short-, medium- and long-term Objectives. ► Market Research - Know your market, understand the industries and sectors you are targeting. Stay updated on market trends, demands, and shifts in the vacancy landscape. ► Flexibility - While it's crucial to have a plan, it's equally important to be adaptable. The recruitment landscape can change rapidly due to economic shifts, technological advancements, and changes in workforce dynamics. Be prepared to pivot your strategy as needed. ► Measurable Goals - Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to track your progress. These could include input and output metrics, leading and lagging indicators and client/candidate feedback scores. Fantastic couple of days at the (TRN) The Recruitment Network summer retreat. Plenty of insightful, inspiring content and value adding discussions.
