2023 was a wild ride for business #sustainability. Wondering how to make sense of it all? Andrew Winston's summary might help. Winston is a leading voice in management and sustainability and the coauthor of Net Positive. He describes 2023 as a year of "duality." "The forces driving companies toward sustainability are relentless … yet we’re not doing enough, and some powerful counter-pressures are in play. I see duality. "As a society, we are winning (more companies doing more than ever) AND losing (emissions and inequality still rising). As the clean economy grows, or human rights and equality get more attention, those who do not want these changes also work to slow progress." Winston identifies 3 key trends that dominated discussions last year: 1. The Anti-ESG Movement 2. China Leads the World to Clean Economy Tipping Points 3. Rising Requirements and Regulations for Reporting According to Wiston, there's more momentum for the progress toward sustainability action than pushback against it. "There wouldn’t be such powerful backlash if there weren’t real progress," he says. We're not going fast enough, but we are moving in the right direction. Do you agree? Do you agree with the Network for Business Sustainability (NBS) that 2023 was wild ride for business #sustainability? What is your position on Andrew Winston's assertion in his Harvard Business Review article that in 2023 the #sustainability movement made some progress in the right direction, although not fast enough?

📣Hello LinkedIn community, Recent insights from the "A World in Balance 2023" report by the 👌Capgemini Research Institute👌 highlight a crucial issue in today's corporate world: while there is a heightened awareness of sustainability, this awareness often fails to translate into concrete actions. As sustainability leaders, we have the power and responsibility to change this narrative. To bridge this gap, we need to take a few crucial steps: - It's essential that sustainability is not just a topic of discussion, but a core aspect of decision-making at the highest levels of our organizations. Board members must be actively engaged in developing and supporting sustainability strategies. - We need to embed social sustainability into our strategies. Environmental goals are critical, but they must be balanced with social sustainability objectives. This means designing initiatives that positively impact employees, supply chain workers, customers, and communities. - We must focus on accurate emissions quantification. Reliable data is the foundation of effective action. By accurately measuring and reporting on emissions, particularly Scope 3 emissions, organizations can identify key areas for improvement and track progress meaningfully. - We need to embrace circular and inclusive design. Moving beyond traditional linear models to a circular economy can significantly reduce waste and environmental impact. Inclusive design ensures that products and services are accessible to all, enhancing social equity. - We must leverage technology to achieve climate goals. Technological innovations, including AI and automation, are powerful tools in our arsenal against climate change. They can optimize resource use, reduce emissions, and enable more sustainable operations. As sustainability leaders, let's commit to turning our sustainability awareness into impactful actions. By doing so, we not only contribute to a healthier planet but also to a more equitable and prosperous society. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how we can further this mission. Let's start a conversation! #SustainabilityLeadership #CorporateResponsibility #EnvironmentalSustainability #SocialImpact #InclusiveDesign #Tech #décarbonation #esg
