Yesterday, we held our 21st meeting of Pickens United since 2016. It is an extremely uncommon setting wherein every elected official in Pickens County is invited to communicate with one another. I don’t know of any other county that does this … and we have great attendance. What struck me again yesterday is how fleeting our time is. I mentally noted that other than the clerk of court elected in 2008, none of us would’ve been in that meeting 10 years ago. I said the uncomfortable truth out loud with, “nobody in this room will be here in 10 years. What we do now is for others in the future.” Related to how fleeting our time is is the fact that what we’re doing is primarily setting our successors up in a good or bad way. Do we change local government? Do we put a moratorium in place? Do we invest in roads or parks? Do we invest in land now instead of being forced to pay higher in future? (All things mentioned yesterday.) We’re not all going to agree, which is why the real-life version of playing SimCity is immensely more complex & it’s all the more reason to communicate.

This is the take. Simon is right. Please do read it. And do consider its implications. In the #organisationdevelopment and #leadership community we of course abhor the injustices of racialisation and racism. We are, are we not, good people whose work is grounded in values and principle. This is not good enough. The dust will settle. For many, white folk, our urgency and realisation will fade. This week I have felt more keenly than ever the deep sorrow, rage and love that #antiracist work evokes in me. I must hang on to, feed, and act from and with those feelings. #OrganisationDevelopment and #Change practitioners and practice must remember and demonstrate our foundation is in social justice work. We must actively work to dismantle structural racism, show racialisation to be the heinous crime that it is, stand firm and ever strive in our commitment to equity and belonging for everyone. Not just because it is right and we are good. Because the inhumanity of this demeans and diminishes us all, including those of us who, like me, can leave the house never having to fear abuse and attack on us, or our families, because of the colour of our skin.
