You finally get the title you’d been wanting in your insurance career. And you still feel empty. This was me, years ago. I had done well in my career. Watching my skillset grow in real time. Getting experience in new areas. Seeing my salary skyrocket. Wearing nice titles. Perfect, right? Not even close. Something was off. And I couldn’t shake it. I wasn’t creating impact. In the way I thought I would. I wasn’t building my career up. In the way I had dreamed of before. I wasn’t pouring from a full cup. I was dissatisfied. Frustrated. Stuck. I tried a lot of things to find relief. Avoiding the issue was the easiest. But these 3 key areas were impactful: [1] Changing my support system. Down to the people. As well as my actual habits. I started small, focused on consistency. [2] Focusing on the relationship with myself. Understanding my strengths. Redefining old standards. I had to get clear on present-then me. [3] Doing a 180 on my personal brand. Identifying my assets. Using them to my advantage. Positioning myself for new opportunities. And embracing them as they came. I can now pour from a full cup. And my career is fueling that. You can have this in your career, too. Very good article here on career advice. I agree, making yourself "indispensable" is a bad strategy and a local optimization. For example, "Jim Moechnig, laid off by a data-storage company in November, is still waiting for 17 years of service and good karma to be reciprocated." A better strategy is a meta-job strategy in which you design for failure and constantly build skills and knowledge outside of your company so you can instantly switch to a new job. I would recommend doing at least 2 hours a day training on skills for your next job while employed at your current job.

Totally agree with this, you have to keep up in a constantly changing landscape.

A few years ago, I said no to a 40% pay increase. (I can’t believe I’m sharing this.) Why? Prior to then: I would have said YES to that offer without hesitation. Because when I first began my insurance career, I made decisions based on: → Playing things safe. → Moving in a linear fashion.  → Climbing the ladder quickly.  → Working twice as hard as others.  → Being grateful for what was given to me. I had a long list of accolades, no denying that. Any carrier or firm would have been lucky to have me. But deep down, something was off in my role. → I lacked vision.  → I operated in burnout. → I couldn’t enjoy things at home. → I worked too many days disengaged. → I was doing the minimum to get by each day. It was clear that this wasn’t about the paycheck. So one day, I looked in the mirror and asked myself: “What type of insurance career do YOU want?” This one moment of clarity led to: → Renewed focus on my career goals.  → Reuniting with a new version of myself.   → Outlining my next role from top to bottom. → Developing a new strategy to pursue that role. → Cultivating a more intentional network and brand. But the best part: I got another offer 21 days after I said no to the last one. This time, it felt more than just right. It felt ALIGNED 🙌🏾 It checked all of my boxes. Came with a 25% salary bump. And was truly perfect for my career. I finally landed a purpose-driven role because: → I narrowed my focus. → I prioritized alignment. → I put in the work upfront.  → I went all in on my desires. → I stuck to simple strategies.
