It is imperative to recognize the need for a language-centered strategy aimed at effectively communicating culturally sensitive topics surrounding the protection of children from sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as safeguarding women from similar threats. Unfortunately, staff members of local organizations often shy away from using such language within communities, particularly during protection sessions with mothers, fathers, and direct participants of interventions. This reluctance poses a critical challenge, undermining the effectiveness of the significant investments made to combat Gender-Based Violence and ensure the safety of children from harassment and abuse. Moreover, the failure to address these issues directly hampers the ability of NGO workers, including Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) personnel, to accurately gauge the situation on the ground, as cultural barriers inhibit the delivery of effective messages. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop and implement appropriate language strategies to overcome these barriers and enhance the impact of initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable populations. #childprotection #languagematter #humanitarianresponse #culture #communication #messages #SDGs2030 #womenprotection #Genderbasedviolence #CEDAW #protection

📣 On Feb. 26, 2024, the Government of Canada introduced the 1st reading of Bill C-63, legislation to enact the Online Harms Act. This proposed law will establish a standard for social media companies to help ensure the safety of its users in Canada and will hold these platforms accountable for content they host. 🛡️ While not yet enacted, the proposed law will protect minors by imposing obligations on online platforms: ✅ Duty of Care - Platforms will be required to take measures to prevent dissemination of harmful content such as child sexual exploitation material, cyberbullying, and content that promotes self-harm or violence. ✅ Content Moderation - Platforms will have to proactively monitor, remove, and report harmful content. ✅ Reporting and Transparency - Platforms will be required to report regularly on their efforts to combat online harms, providing transparency about their content moderation practices and the effectiveness of their measures. 🌟 This legislation is particularly crucial for protecting Indigenous Peoples and 2SLGBTQ+ communities in Canada, who are especially vulnerable to online harms. 📚 Studies have shown that Indigenous youth are more likely to experience cyberbullying than non-Indigenous youth (46% vs. 26%). Similarly, 2SLGBTQ+ young people were more likely than their non-2SLGBTQ+ counterparts to experience cybervictimization (49% vs. 23%). Source: https://bit.ly/4ed7kCE 🌱 Addressing these risks is vital for safeguarding mental health of children and youth within these communities, ensuring they can grow up in a safer, more supportive online environment. By prioritizing safety of the most vulnerable, we can create a more inclusive digital space to benefit everyone. 💌 This is one of a series of posts from Myles Ahead's youth-led campaign, #FreeToBeSafe, to help make social media safe. ⚡ 💥 EXCITING RESEARCH NEWS! 📰 🔥 The The Equality Institute, Dr. Emma Fulu (she/her) in close partnership with Michael Flood from QUT, Lula Dembele and Dr Jozica Kutin from Good Shepard, and Patricia Cullen from UNSW have been awarded ANROWS funding to implement a ground-breaking study on violence #perpetration in Australia. For decades, Australia has been collecting data on people's experiences of violence. This study will examine the other side of the coin - seeking to measure the extent, character, and drivers of intimate partner violence (IPV) and non-partner sexual violence perpetration. 🌏 While large-scale violence perpetration studies have been conducted in other parts of the world (see link in comments), this is the FIRST TIME a study of this kind will be conducted in Australia. 💖 This award is the culmination of years of individual and collective advocacy by our project partners. We are so happy that these tireless efforts have finally resulted in funding for this much-needed research.
