Trump making billions on his social media platform is such a huge story for so many reasons. Not least because so many said it had no chance.

It was fun going down memory lane reading this article from The Wall Street Journal about Susquehanna International Group, LLP (SIG), where I began my career. The company’s use of poker to train analysts is authentic, effective, and intense. The best part of the experience was having a senior trader deal and scrutinize every game. In this process, there was no mistaking bad process and good outcome. Each decision was dissected. At any moment, the dealer might stop the game and fire questions: what hand did you put your opponent on? What did you calculate as your pot odds on that bet versus the odds of getting various hands? What was your expected value? We were taught to “think in bets” and see the world probabilistically. Did you have a positive expected value there? Do you think you sized your bet appropriately? Why or why not? We were taught to gather information from our opponents' betting behavior, table position, psychology, and personality to make decisions in the face of uncertainty. It was humbling to sit at a table with people far smarter and more experienced than you, to make a bet or play a hand, only to have a pro unpack and filet your play. But the process made you better. As I read this article, I also remembered a moment from my first week on the desk, fresh out of UVA. I was sitting between Greg and Matt on the equity sales desk. I recall we had an order from a client to execute a block trade on MSFT. “Send that over the hoot,” Greg said to me. It was my first order. I was excited. Here we go. Except, I had no idea what “the hoot” was, and I knew time was of the essence. I didn’t stop to think. I stood up and yelled over my double computer monitors, “Buy 10,000 MSFT for [whatever the price was].” This was an open floor, mind you, full of traders, not even through their morning coffee. They now looked up from their blinking monitors, askance, at this crazy new kid yelling into the ether. Greg and Matt doubled over in laughter. After collecting himself, Greg showed me “the hoot” was the intercom button on my phone, which dialed instantaneously into the New York Stock Exchange floor trader. I merely needed to hit that button and speak into the microphone on my phone board. Ah, I see. Lesson learned. May we all show a little more empathy to the person whose first week it is, who might have just joined our team right out of school... We all had a first week. A time when we were desperately trying to learn all the new lingo and jargon, find our way, and do our best. A time when we didn't yet know what “the hoot” was. https://lnkd.in/egXTrAyY

Joshua Brown's perspective and the overarching theme he presents offer valuable insights. Delving deeper, the frequency of investment account reviews inversely correlates with positive balance probabilities. Simply put: less frequent checks may yield better outcomes. Examining 40 years of S&P 500 data reveals a fascinating trend: daily account reviews result in a positive balance 53% of the time. This percentage climbs to 70% with quarterly reviews and peaks at 80% when done annually. Curiosity about portfolio values is natural, yet it can inadvertently heighten anxiety, prompting decisions driven by emotion rather than strategy, potentially diminishing returns.
True story: I had a client come up to me in Los Angeles two weeks ago and tell me “I used to watch you all the time. Then we hired you guys and I don’t pay any attention to this stuff at all.” He was standing next to one of my advisors, Mr. Jonathan Novy and was so excited to tell me how much less he was following the markets day to day now that Jonathan was helping him. It was music to my ears. There are better things to be doing than watching the ticker all day, swinging from bull to bear, obsessing over stuff no one will remember in five years. Lester Freeman said it best on The Wire: “A life, Jimmy, you know what that is? It’s what happens while you’re waiting for moments that never come.” On ‘Beautiful Boy’ John Lennon sang “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Thanks for following my market commentary. When you see me, I’m doing my very best to give you this message: Most things work out, go live your life.
