The #utilities industry, including #power, #water, and #gas services, plays a crucial role in our daily lives. During #hurricanes and other natural #disasters, this sector faces heightened #challenges as infrastructure can be severely damaged, leading to widespread outages and repair efforts. This period is a perfect opportunity for hackers. With utilities focusing on restoring services, #cybersecurity defenses might be stretched thin. #Hackers exploit this chaos, targeting vulnerable systems with #ransomware, #data #breaches, and other malicious activities. Cybersecurity measures and constant vigilance are essential to protect our #critical #infrastructure #technology #cyber #threat #risk #cypresscyberc

Remember the golden rule for flooded roads: 'If it's flooded, forget it.' Just like we heed this advice for physical safety, let's apply a similar mindset to our digital lives. If a link seems suspicious, forget it. If an email asks for sensitive information, forget it. Let's prioritise cyber safety by staying alert and cautious online. Protect yourself, your data, and your organisation from potential cyber floods. #CyberSecurity #IfItsFloodedForgetIt

💃 “Let's get physical, physical…” Earlier this week a small US municipality switched the water system to manual controls, protecting both water quality and supply. 💥 It’s the latest breach where critical infrastructure organisations worldwide are under constant attack. Hardly any of these attacks get to this advanced stage and thankfully close to none have actual cyber physical outcomes. 📈 Yet the sophistication, intensity and volume of these attacks continues to climb. Just like cybercriminals continue to step up their game, defenders must continue to be match fit. 🚨 The city of Wichita, Kansas, recently faced a cyberattack on its water system, reflecting a growing trend across the US. Hackers used phishing and default passwords to target vital infrastructure such as water utilities. The EPA warned about the vulnerability of many systems due to lacking updated security measures. These attacks have raised concerns about public trust in water safety and the potential for future attacks on operational technology controlling treatment plants, leading to prolonged supply disruptions.💧 Despite alerts from the EPA and FBI, improvements in cybersecurity practices within utilities have been slow due to budget constraints and outdated systems. The potential use of advanced tactics, including AI by malicious actors, underlines the urgency to address these vulnerabilities to safeguard public safety and national security. Water utilities are more than just pipes and reservoirs—they're a vital part of our infrastructure, and they're under threat. 🚰 Recent cyberattacks on water systems in Texas and beyond underscore the need for robust cybersecurity measures. "What we tend to see is these organizations that are broadly underinvested, especially when it comes to municipalities,” says Matt Warner, CTO and co-founder of Blumira. Take a look at this Information Week article to learn why strengthening cyber defenses is crucial for protecting our water systems: https://okt.to/7alNAs #WaterInfrastructure #CyberSecurity #CyberResiliency

The entire #watersector is considered one of the least secure infrastructure sectors. As #cybercriminals target water organizations for this exact reason, more than data is at risk - human life and safety can be affected as well. Regulation and mature #cyberrisk practices must take center stage for water utilities' #cybersecurity. Discover more about what Padraic O'Reilly had to say in this Information Security Media Group (ISMG) piece by Chris Riotta. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gAr3pnxA

CISA and other federal agencies and their counterparts in Canada and the UK recently warned North American and European water treatment systems operators to shore up their defenses in the face of malicious cyber activity targeting water facilities. They cite repeated breaches by pro-Russia hacktivists who are using rudimentary attack techniques to exploit vulnerabilities in outdated remote access software. Once in the network, they can gain control of human machine interfaces that are used to monitor or make changes to the system, and can compromise industrial control systems that operate critical processes within the facilities. You would prepare your business for a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or an earthquake, so why wouldn’t you prepare it from a digital cyber attack where hackers are DELIBERATELY seeking you out? If you don’t have a plan in place, before you’re a victim of a cyber attack is the right time to get one. It is much easier to prevent a data breach than it is to recover from one. In fact, the sad news is that most never recover at all! Don’t become part of that group.
