I just finished "Kill Chain" by Christian Brose. The book explores the future of warfare and technology's role in reshaping military strategy. Brose, a former staff director of the Senate Armed Services Committee, explains the evolving landscape of modern conflict, emphasizing the crucial link between innovation and national security. Kill Chain offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies. Brose's deep understanding of defense issues make this book not only informative but also highly relevant for those in the armed forces. It's a must-read that sheds light on the intricate web of interconnected capabilities shaping the future battlefield, making it an invaluable resource for anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of the evolving dynamics in military technology. For my prior/current IBMers, the gentleman to Tara’s right is Pryon’s Igor Jablokov, the Program Director at IBM that led the team that designed the precursor to Watson. I heard the term "DefenseTech" while I was in the Army and was pretty skeptical as to how "Tech" it really was (look at a DAGR or the way we do inventories). With prevailing threats abroad, it's comforting to see a lot of smart people from the tech world, leading in their respective disciplines, coming together to solve complex government/military issues. A full list would be way too long to put on LinkedIn but a few compelling ones, if you're interested: Gecko Robotics, Pryon, Govini, Anduril Industries, Shield AI, ZeroEyes, Vannevar Labs. Focusing on the video: Procurement is never ‘just procurement’ and when it is, that’s when your “next-gen” or “advanced” platform fails to be effective (see money, architectural/organizational gaps, organizational buy-in, training, use-in-action, etc). Looking at buyers of materials, end-user functions, broad use cases, constraints on supply chain and delivery timing, provenance; the list could go on and on but these are all things that will not be a choice (luxury) in a peer-to-peer conflict. Anduril's Founder, Palmer Luckey (Founder of Oculus VR), has talked openly about the obvious problems with acquisitions of materials or end products from foreign adversaries, which is just one of many things that need addressed when reviewing the DoD Acquisitions Process. We won WWII thru manufacturing output, economic might and selfless sacrifice. Let's get back to doing what we do best, best.

During yesterday’s panel at #RNDF2023, U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Dr. William LaPlante briefly discussed the Pentagon’s inaugural National Defense Industrial Strategy (NDIS) that is set to be released soon. This strategy is specifically designed to incentivize new capital investment and expand and sustain new capacity. It provides a thorough roadmap to how we can grow capabilities and modernize the defense industry. As Dr. LaPlante mentioned, however, it will take bold, coordinated action from Congress, the administration, and the private sector to get our industrial base back in fighting shape. #defense #defenseindustry #manufacturing #pentagon
