States like Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin have formed teams known as civilian cybersecurity corps (C3) to help bolster state and local cybersecurity. This morning, @New America's #ShareTheMicInCyber Fellow @Michael Razeeq spoke on CyberWire's Caveat on his research on C3's, trends in how they're governed and used, and how they leverage every-day citizens to contribute to state and local cybersecurity. So you thought NIST 800-171 was just for defense contractors, eh? Would it shock you to hear that CMMC is only a small piece of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) puzzle? Executive Order 13556, which was issued on November 4, 2010, was a major step in protecting Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) under Federal contracts. It's had dozens of fits and starts. And now... after seven (yes, 7) years 🤯 ... 🥁 drumroll please 🥁 ... FAR Case 2017-016 has cleared the OMB approval process! What does this mean? We're in the home stretch of CUI protection requirements being solidified in Federal contracts for all civilian organizations, not just those in the Defense Industrial Base. The list of Federal CUI Categories can be found within the National Archives for reference: https://lnkd.in/gUgwxzUA This should hit the Federal Register in the coming weeks, similar to the most recent publication of updated CMMC rulemaking. Do you know how this new FAR requirement will impact your Federal contracts and Information Security program? https://lnkd.in/g5r4Extw #CUI #Federal #Contract #Compliance #Regulation #Cyber #CyberSecurity #Security #InformationSecurity #NIST

The U.S. Department of Defense formally asked lawmakers to kill a proposal that would require an independent assessment of establishing a separate cyber service. In April Rep. Mike Gallagher, Chairman of the Cyber, Information Technologies and Innovation Subcommittee suggested an independent evaluation of a notional Cyber Force, to be led by an entity other than the Department of Defense. Mieke Eoynag, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for cyber policy felt that a cyber service might have some benefits in ease of administrative management, but the Pentagon has a variety of military services in the Department of Defense who perform a variety of missions so having a cyber service that is divorced from those particular missions sets may pose some challenges in understanding the warfighting needs of the services to provide cyber to enable that fight. #pentagon #dod #cyberservice #miekeeoynag #mikegallagher #cyberbreach #cyberattack #cybersecurity #securityoperations #securityoperationscenter #informationsecurity #infosec #threatintelligence #networksecurity #networkforensics #hackers #ransomware #malware #phishing #DDOS #bruteforce #vulnerability Read more: https://lnkd.in/gNphYJ8X

As cyber attacks increasingly target schools, hospitals, and libraries, a highly-skilled cybersecurity workforce is more vital than ever. Unfortunately, as Michael points out in this report, the U.S. would need to train 40% of new workers in cybersecurity over the next 7 years to meet the growing cyber workforce gap! Cybersecurity requires action from everyone. And by working together and integrating privacy best practices as part of our online habits, we can make life harder for hackers and safer for ourselves and our communities. The cybersecurity lessons in Common Sense’s digital citizenship curriculum can help everyone — but especially kids — learn how to stay safe online. Explore our lessons, plus helpful resources from our #CyberCivilDefense partners here: https://lnkd.in/eSmynYeF
A new report from Michael R.azeeq and New America spotlights how states are establishing Civilian Cyber Corps (C3s) — organizations that facilitate cyber volunteer services — to help address cyber workforce challenges, improve their cyber resiliency, and develop cyber emergency response capabilities across the country. Michael's report references how university cybersecurity clinics like those at the University of California, Berkeley and others in The Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics as well as other cyber volunteer efforts coordinated by nonprofits like CyberPeace Institute are taking a "whole-of-society approach" to cybersecurity. Congratulations, Michael, on this fantastic contribution toward the #CyberCivilDefense ecosystem. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/g-REUTke
