The Hornsdale Power Reserve in Australia: One of the most successful renewable energy microcrid projects, the first biggest battery storage in the world today. OVERVIEW The Hornsdale Power Reserve is the world’s first big battery. It provides essential grid-support services. The first 100 MW/129 MWh was completed in November 2017. In its first two years of operation the Hornsdale Power Reserve confirmed the benefits associated with grid-scale batteries in the National Electricity Market and saved South Australian consumers over $150 million. Following this success, a 50 MW/64.5 MWh expansion was completed in September 2020. As part of the expansion the full 150 MW is being upgraded to include Tesla’s Virtual Machine Mode, enabling the battery to provide inertia support services to the electricity grid. As the penetration of renewable energy grows, storage technologies including LIBs provide a solution to the intermittency of generation resources, primarily solar and wind. The LIB cell is the fundamental component of a BESS. The companies that make BESSs are called integrators. This market is dominated by 3 Chinese companies (a combined market share of 34%) and 2 US companies (30% combined market share). The second phase of the Small-Scale Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (SRESS) has been launched by Minister Ryan. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and Renewable Energy Communities would benefit greatly from this phase of the electricity support scheme, which will set fixed prices for solar and wind installations ranging in size from 50kW to 6MW. It is an addition to the RESS's (Renewable Electricity Support Scheme) microgeneration support for smaller projects and competitive auctions for larger projects. #IRP 2023, the country's electricity plan is finally out for public comment. At a glance, the RE allocation in general and solar pv in particular is on the low side, South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) monitors the pipeline of RE projects quite closely. Besides NERSA registrations ( at above 6 GW already, granted most of those projects are yet to reach financial close), the annual #SAREGS survey that we conduct with South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) and Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd predicts a lot higher appetite for private sector RE. We will study this thoroughly before we make definitive remarks. The much anticipated Integrated Resource Plan has been released, with some sobering findings: “Analysis of the grid period between now and year 2030 highlights a concerning electricity supply and demand deficit. While ongoing additional generation capacity initiatives are expected to alleviate unserved energy, they do not fully address the underlying system adequacy. “The final policy decision must be taken on the basis of long term decarboniation trajectory while improving South Africa's competitiveness, growing the economy through an industrial renaissance." Since the implementation of #ERCOT Contingency Reserve Service (ECRS), a new type of reserve to support grid reliability as more intermittent renewable generation enters the market, several changes have been observed. In our recent ERCOT Summer Outlook, we did a deep dive into how coal and #naturalgas generators are offering energy into the market post-implementation. The results of our analysis show that the changes to daily economic strategies have been quite varied. The visual below depicts specific thermal generators in Texas that have adjusted their operational strategies when offering generation into the market. The graphic shows the change in these generator bids when comparing averages of January to March in 2023 and 2024. Possible explanations for these changes include increased competition due to growth in #renewables, limited reserve availability during summer 2023, or the implementation of ECRS stretching the thermal stack to serve both energy and ancillary service needs. While the first reason may explain the lowering of bid blocks, the latter two possibilities would explain the increase shown. While all of these explanations are possibilities generator bidding strategies are ultimately competitive and unique to fit specific needs.
