Though not anything close to my area of interest, I decided to do some background research on VIP protection, with a focus on our country and the structure of our security units.
Article 243 of constitution establishes the structure of The National Police Service and devolves it into Administration police and Kenya police (Blue boys as commonly Known). KPS comprises of units as GSU, DCI, Regular police, Traffic dept whereas Anti stock Border patrol, RDU are units in the AP.
They have distinct roles but outright mandate is preservation of peace and security, Law and order, protection of lives and prop. Additionally, they have sub units in each I.E GSU has companies like recce, G companies.
GSU & AP training differ somewhat from regular police, basic training is given to both which includes firearm, legal concepts, and perhaps a coded language.
GSU specializes in close combat, VIP protection, sniper training, intel collection, special ops like hostage rescue, defensive driving.
AP conduct different roles like protection of cash in transit, critical infrastructure Protection, govt offices, banks, institutions like Universities and national govt admin offices like chief camp, cc offices, hence the name askari wa Kwa chief.
It is imperative to know that security to President, the Deputy President and high dignitaries is from the GSU companies, allocation of security is guided by the threat and risk analysis of the person to be served with security and assessment must therefore be made to ascertain level of risk
Note GSU and AP have varying roles hence can’t be compared on who is tougher only except if they were to be ranked in performance at their own niches. Their roles differ and so does their training.
