The history of the largest explosions #36 Port Chicago explosion On July 17, 1944, one of the most catastrophic explosions in U.S. history occurred at Port Chicago, California. This tragic event, which took place during World War II, led to the deaths of 320 sailors and civilians and injured nearly 400 others. Background Port Chicago Naval Magazine, located about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, was a crucial munitions loading facility. At the time of the explosion, two ships, the “SS Quinault Victory” and “SS E.A. Bryan”, were being loaded with bombs, shells, and other explosives destined for the Pacific theatre. The Explosion The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, but it is believed that unsafe handling practices, lack of proper training, and the sheer volume of munitions played significant roles. The explosion occurred while the ships were being loaded with 4,606 tons of ammunition. The blast was so powerful that it obliterated the pier, destroyed both ships and left a crater 66 feet deep. It registered a seismic shock equivalent to a 3.4 magnitude earthquake. Can the military and conservation coexist? Elizabeth Carter, the Maryland/DC Chapter's Land Protection Director, was interviewed in a recent story by NPR Utah to help answer this question as over 2.7 million acres of the Great Salt Lake region in Utah was designated as the "Great Salt Lake Sentinel Landscape." The story features Carter's important work within the Middle Chesapeake Sentinel Landscape, a similarly managed area situated along the Chesapeake Bay and anchored by a naval aircraft testing location. Since its designation, the Middle Chesapeake Sentinel Landscape partners have pursued projects that collectively preserve natural resources. Cater was quoted in the story: “You're not just leaning on a single source. You're finding all these different partners with overlapping interests and mutual benefits to create this knitting of protected lands. That's what I would say is daunting but worthwhile.” Read the story here: https://nature.ly/3RHHWv6 #ConservationCollaboration #SentinelLanscape

🇺🇸 In 1994, the USS Constellation faced a grim future, condemned due to severe deterioration. Baltimore’s Inner Harbor watched as the historic ship, once a symbol of naval might, was closed to visitors, her rig removed. But hope was not lost – Mayor Schmoke’s commission led to a pivotal moment in November 1996. The ship was moved to a shipyard near Fort McHenry, marking the beginning of an ambitious restoration project. The restoration process was a monumental task. The hull, especially, was in critical condition, with 90% of its framing above the waterline needing replacement. Imagine this: shipwrights crafting intricate patterns for new frames, requiring over 200,000 board feet of lumber! The “Gold Mosaic” technique was used to create a new laminated hull shell, the largest of its kind. And the rigging? It was transformed to mirror its Civil War-era glory, with a remarkable 32-inch square, 51-foot long bowsprit and nearly five miles of standing rigging meticulously serviced. This was not just a repair job; it was a revival of a legend. 🛠 Join us in celebrating this incredible journey of restoration, a testament to the resilience of our maritime heritage. Step aboard the USS Constellation, reborn from the ashes of time, and feel the pulse of history under your feet. #USSConstellation#MaritimeRestoration#BaltimoreHarbor #VisitBaltimore#AmericanHeritage#HeritagePreservation#Heritage#MaritimeHeritage https://lnkd.in/demacgyU

An Iranian commercial ship has some analysts comparing it to the infamous “Q-ships” of the World Wars. Q-Ships are commercial ships outfitted with weapons, allowing them to ambush weaker ships. Modern commercial ships, especially giant container or tanker ships, can take on a lot of armament and are surprisingly difficult to sink. The newest addition to Iran’s navy, Shahid Mahdavi, is a commercial ship armed with ballistic missiles. Analysts have described it as the return of the Q-ship—a lost type of warship popular during the World Wars. Designed to ambush both predators and prey, Q-ships are meant to blend in with local shipping, presenting themselves as ordinary commercial ships, before unmasking their weapons and opening fire.

With all of the appalling things that we have happening in the United States, the tenets of "duty, honor, and country" appear to be on the chopping block at the West Point. When an organization like West Point, takes such action something so symbolic and fundamental to the core of our national security and tosses its core values to the wind, then the national identity and all that belies a cohesive nation will begin to fall overtly and across the board. https://lnkd.in/gABdEmia

One of the lesser known chapters of Europe's Age of Crusades were the Hussite Crusades medieval Bohemia (modern Czech Republic) in the early 15th century. The Hussites fought for their right to worship as they saw fit against Catholic enemies who surrounded them, and in doing so, perfected a form of tactics using armored wagons and a mix of weapons, including the newest gunpowder technologies. Jan Žižka, the "one-eyed general" was the architect of this innovative form of warfare. #worldhistory, #medievalhistory, and #militaryhistory

There is so much history around the U.S. Flag. Did you know... White is for purity & innocence, Red is for valor and hardiness & Blue is for vigilance, perseverance and justice. The Declaration of Independence made the adoption of the American Flag necessary. It was officially adopted by the Continental Congress as the official American Flag on June 14, 1777 during the Revolutionary War. In 1818 Congress decided to retain the 13 stripes and add a star for each state. On July 4, 1960 the new 50 star flag was flown for the first time & still flies today. More Facts on Almanac.com
