it was amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What is it we do when we use a camera?
The obvious answer is that we make a visual record of something, whether it's a selfie, a family occasion or holiday snaps for sharing with friends. This is everyday photography, but since the first cameras were made there have been those who use the vast potential of photography for altogether more serious purposes.
War photographers, for example, have since the days of the American Civil War, created a visual record of human conflict that both helps us understand our past and, hopefully, reminds generations to come not to make the same mistakes again. News photographers, record our changing world and the events which shape our nations, continents and planet. Others use their cameras to help them create works of photographic art. Willem Wernsen is one of this latter group, and the ambition of his art is evidenced by his book "Behind the Great Wall".
Unlike some fine art photographers though, Wernsen's work transcends artistic intent and moves us into another realm --- one where our shared humanity speaks to us through the faces we see and the moments of lives we are privileged to witness. Each of Wernsen's beautiful images is, in a sense, part of an anthropological study that evolves as the pages of "Behind the Great Wall" are turned. We learn about our own humanity and about humanity in the context of a diverse and multifaceted species. That we are not distracted by the garish colours of modern life means these stark, monochrome images compel us to look beyond the obvious and discover in them something that is meaningful to us on a deeply personal level.
I recommend "Behind the Great Wall" to anyone interested in both photography as art and in what it is to be human.
(You can purchase this large format, 190 page, cloth-bound hardcover book by visiting Willem Wernsen's website. For such an essential book it's modestly priced and will be autographed.
The photographer will also send you a free signed print (suitable for framing) of your choice of image from the book, on A3+ fine art photo paper, image size 30 x 30 centimetres.
