Happy Monday! We have new fall interns! You know what that means - we get to brighten the start of each week by introducing you to one of our phenomenal interns! Today we'd love it if you'd join us in giving Eric Han a huge, sunny welcome! "Being able to intern is taking part in actively making changes to the state's legislation. The impact of SLC is significant and impressive, especially in the legislative battles made for minority groups in Florida. When talking to Chelsea about her reason to move to Florida and work in a nonprofit, she responded that Florida is especially vulnerable and in need of minority protections, I agree with the sentiment." MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHILE INTERNING WITH SLC: Interacting with clients, understanding the whole process from taking a case to going to court CORE BELIEF: Social justice relies upon the sacrificial and passionate spirit to make changes. FUTURE GOALS: I see my career in three directions, criminal, intellectual property/copyright, and health care law. Apart from being interested in the topics, those are fields that can have profound impact on people whether it be individual or community wide. Being a summer associate in 2021 meant a remote experience for my entire class. My firm sent me a laptop and monitor, and I set up in my law school's library for the summer. There are benefits and drawbacks to any situation, but the biggest downside to that summer was the lack of face-to-face interaction. We did the best we could with the cards we were dealt. I still made some connections, but nothing like I could have had we been in-person. So my advice to summer associates is take advantage of the opportunity to make connections this summer. The relationships you build this summer will prove invaluable when you are navigating associateship post-graduation. Go to all the events. Get people to talk about themselves. Today we say goodbye to our Summer Intern, Russell Chiang. Russell is heading off to his third year at University of Washington School of Law, and it has been so much fun to get to know him even better than we did last year. We asked Russell to tell us three things he’ll take with him from his time at Lasher: “My second summer at Lasher has been full of so many great experiences! Three things I took away from my time at Lasher: first is the reinforced importance of communication, for the attorneys and staff you work with but also for relaying to clients the information needed to help get them on the same page when assessing solutions. Second, is how valuable relationships are – and again – both in the office and out. Hi Network, Earlier this week I had the opportunity to be apart of WCAN’s Early Application Summer School! Being amidst 20-24 year old women did intimidate me slightly, but it definitely allowed me to realise that I might just be ‘ahead of the game' utilising every opportunity that had come my way is what had landed me in this particular place, being given the grace to be able to sit and network with many great women, trainee solicitors, was such an experience. Herbert Smith Freehills places a strong emphasis on fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce, further enhancing its work environment as well as client relations. The opportunity to share a space with great women at this law practice whilst being one of the youngest really highlighted the importance of having a reputation for excellence, which is what I aim to strive for. A few pointers from the network event I think would be diligent of me to share: 🎯: take advantage of a universities’ or companies pro bono or law clinic for experience 🎯: commercial awareness is key, most law firms do ask questions, so be prepared to answer and BE SPECIFIC. 🎯: research and follow up on interests for where you would like to apply for internships or even maybe for pupillages; your application needs to show what firm you many be applying to just from its contents alone, highlighting specific interests.

❗️❗️Attention❗️❗️ All women in law: Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing – my internship experience highlights the importance of trusting your instincts and setting workplace boundaries. During my internship at the Court, I had an experience that underscored the importance of vigilance and boundaries in professional relationships. An older advocate extended his card to me, seemingly to network. As a first-generation lawyer, I saw this as a valuable opportunity to expand my professional circle. However, it soon became clear that his intentions were far from profession. Receiving messages at odd hours and experiencing inappropriate proximity in Court led me to discover, through inquiries, that this individual has a history of predatory behavior towards women advocates and interns.This incident serves as a stark reminder that we must always prioritize our safety and be cautious of those who may exploit our trust. It's crucial to establish and maintain professional boundaries and seek guidance when something feels off.  To my fellow interns and young professionals and advocates, trust your instincts, seek advice, and don't hesitate to speak up if you encounter similar situations.
