Being a summer associate in 2021 meant a remote experience for my entire class. My firm sent me a laptop and monitor, and I set up in my law school's library for the summer. There are benefits and drawbacks to any situation, but the biggest downside to that summer was the lack of face-to-face interaction. We did the best we could with the cards we were dealt. I still made some connections, but nothing like I could have had we been in-person. So my advice to summer associates is take advantage of the opportunity to make connections this summer. The relationships you build this summer will prove invaluable when you are navigating associateship post-graduation. Go to all the events. Get people to talk about themselves. Overall, the private messages I have had from summer students about their experiences have been quite positive. Perhaps most gratifying is that they really appreciate their fellow summer students. Three things they would like to see: 1 immediate substantive feedback from those they are working for 2 more time spent in sessions with leading partners on what skills and strengths they prioritize in those who work with them and how to develop them 3 more education on the business of law-what is the firm strategy, areas for more emphasis; how do you make your money -big clients, more clients, higher rates, more hours-how does it work -we can read the strategy of most businesses. What is yours?

All the best to students beginning a summer with firms. All the best to students doing other things for the summer. For those with law firm summers, watch how people treat each other and whether the partners treat the associates with respect Assess how happy the associates are ( feel free to ask them) and whether they seem happy. Is there a partner spending time with you every day? Do partners take you out to lunch? Does a partner invite a group of you to play golf or to a Blue Jays game or to something else fun that interests you and a couple of other summer students? Do you get meaningful work? Do you get meaningful feedback? Do you go to client meetings? Are some students treated better than others? Have you been asked what you hope to get out of the summer? Do partners give you an overview of the matters you are working on-how did the firm get the work; how significant is the project? Is the partner excited by the matter? Can you help on a pro bono matter? Will your work be seen by the client? Did you get a chance to take a hand at a first draft of something of significance? Will 20 partners remember you on Oct 15? Would you be happy to work with 75% of them next year? HAVE FUN It is your summer, make the most of it. Make sure people at all levels in the firm or company will remember who you are for at least five good reasons. Have fun-it isn’t worth it if it isn’t fun and you don’t feel valued.

Summer Students -Introduce yourself to 20 lawyers ( at least five partners) and 20 staff members today. Associates-Introduce yourself to 10 non department partners , 15 staff members and 10 students today. Partners -introduce yourself to 10 non department partners, 10 associates, 10 staff members and 10 students today. Smaller Firms -adjust for size but you may only need to say Hi again. You will be glad you did.
