If you’ve ever spent time around an aircraft mechanic, you know the proliferation of stories they can tell. Just ask Mia Scarbrough. It is as if they have a bottomless reservoir from which to draw. ✒ At Delta Air Lines in the early 90s, the mechanics began every story with “back at the old terminal me and Stumpy Burdett …” The stories all end similarly: “and we signed her off just before pushback.” Oddly, you never hear the same story twice, at least not precisely as before. Somehow, the embellishments grew over time, the sun shone hotter, the jet flew faster, or the Lead yelled louder. IFYKYK. In my latest column for FLYING Magazine, we honor those A&P storytellers and highlight their contributions to the field of aircraft maintenance. 🛩 Under the pen name Isak Dinesen, Karen Blixen offers this insight about storytelling: “All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story or tell a story about them.” Aircraft maintenance is hard work. AMTs put in long hours, often in extreme conditions, and with little fanfare. I love aircraft maintenance! Yes, it is real work that you can’t do by teleworking. Yes, techs must work hard, get dirty, be mentally challenged often…, but Aircraft Maintenance Technicians are critical to keeping the skies safe, moving people and precious goods as quickly as possible around the globe, and they ensure people will want to keep flying and moving their precious cargo via air by providing the most reliable transportation system in the world. Pilots are a key factor to safety Air travel, but so are the aircraft maintenance technicians, yet in the United States the appreciation and compensation is way different. Even with that stated, it is extremely satisfying seeing your aircraft leave the hangar and get back to doing what it was built for whether that be protecting freedom and democracy, or connecting people, or moving lots of mail and cargo.

This article focuses on the outcome of establishing and opportunity that creates needed skills and a profession for inspired people.

Pathway programs are becoming increasingly common in the fixed wing world, and it's great to see them successfully adopted in the rotary world too! However, what really caught my attention in this article were the pilot's own words. As Mario puts it, "My favourite part about flying is just the adrenaline when you wake up and thinking about flying that day. It just makes you feel unreal and grateful that you get the opportunity to fly a magnificent machine. I have read many books by Richard Bach over the years but there are four that I would recommend to any pilot, whatever their level of experience. Here’s something I haven’t shared before:  At the age of 50, I became a General Aviation Pilot.  It’s become an important and fun part of my life. When I turned 49, I decided to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a general aviation pilot. I thought to myself if I didn’t do it then, I would never do it. Now I’ve been flying for 6 years and have over 1000 hours in the air.  And I love it!   The biggest question I would get from family and friends was: Why do you want to fly? Well, good question… I loved watching aviation related shows when I was a kid (Six Million dollar Man and Black Sheep Squadron, Top Gun, etc.) and I almost got my license right out of college but decided not to due to the costs.  My answer was pretty straight forward: I wanted to do it and I didn’t want to have a big regret later in life.     The next question would always be around safety… And yes, safety would be and remains incredibly important in the pursuit of my dream. Frankly, the safety of flying became a huge passion and time suck for me. I did a ton of research around it and learned lots of important lessons before ever flying solo. Like anything now, it’s not hard to find information on any topic and there are lots of books, web sites, and videos on aviation safety. And one thing about pilots I learned, is that they all like to share personal stories and lessons about their own experiences.     One surprising thing I didn’t expect to learn: there are many parallels of being a pilot to being a CEO. I plan to share a few these lessons over the next couple of weeks and months. In the meantime, happy to answer any questions and thoughts you might have on the topic.

With the return to these #trafficlevels, effective #training and an adequate supply of personnel remain critical to maintain the #health, #safety and #prosperity of the global aviation #ecosystem, says Boeing With the return of commercial #airtravel to its former glory, the #demand for training and related services has accordingly shown signs of faster #recovery, but the industry still faces lingering #challenges in meeting this demand. Among them are insufficient #trainingcapacity to #support significant personnel shortage and the lag time required to bring personnel online while continuing to prioritize safety. To support the rapid #recovery and growth driven by expansion of global fleets, the #aviationindustry will need a long-term #strategy that addresses upcoming labor challenges. Investment in early career-development programs and outreach efforts that spark excitement among future aviators will be essential to a healthy aviation market for years to come. As rightly predicted by aviation stakeholders, long-term demand for newly qualified aviation personnel continues to remains strong only to get much stronger in next few years.
