💡Which approach is better for addressing crime and sanctions (see more below) 👇 🔸Tether USDT - reactionary but will immediately freeze accounts when instructed directly by law enforcement or added to OFAC list. Target customers are emerging markets and regions outside the United States. 🔸Circle USDC - strives to be compliant with regulators and operates within a regulatory framework that is lacking due to laws and clarity from regulators. Freezing accounts goes through the legal framework and judicial process which can result in lengthy delays in freezing accounts. Customers are primarily in US and other developed countries. Cryptocurrencies, with their decentralized and pseudonymous nature, have become a preferred avenue for certain illicit activities. Money laundering, fraud, and other financial crimes find refuge in the anonymity offered by blockchain transactions. As a result, the need for robust regulatory measures and effective enforcement mechanisms has become imperative to maintain trust and security in the crypto sphere. Enforcement agencies are also ramping up efforts to tackle crypto-related crimes by leveraging advanced analytics and investigative tools which provides insights into blockchain transactions, helping authorities track and combat illicit activities.

Nick Pailthorpe is truly a wealth of information regarding safe communication with law enforcement. If your company receives civil or criminal legal inquiries, it can be hard to confidently reply to these legal processes in a timely manner. Check out our recent blog post below, or shoot me a message if you'd like to learn more about what we're doing to empower teams and ensure safety.
Brazil is a large country with numerous police agencies facing a multitude of different types of crime including homicide, school shootings, cryptocurrency crimes, domestic violence, organized crime, and terrorism. Local law enforcement knows that to keep their communities safe, they need a safe, secure, and efficient line of communication with tech platforms— something Kodex knows quite a lot about. We joined more than 1,200 local investigators and law enforcement agents in Brazil in April to address the complexity of investigations there, and our Global Director of Government Relations, Nick Pailthorpe, recapped the key ideas for our blog. I just listened to a fireside chat with Michael Gronager (Chainalysis CEO) and Dante Disparte (Circle Chief Strategy Officer) on crypto crime and compliance. It's fascinating to see how crypto is evolving from a niche technology to a mainstream economic tool. The increased institutional involvement and focus on compliance could also be key to crypto's growth potential in the global financial system. So, let’s move on from agonizing over regulatory compliance to making the best use of compliance to create a more efficient economy. Original discussion: https://lnkd.in/gsGXZGnY (A shout out to SCB 10X for organizing such a great conference!) My notes: 🔍1. Crypto's transparency allows us to see the economy more clearly: This visibility lets us observe all types of transactions, making it a great tool for gauging crime levels more accurately. 📱2. Better tech ≠ More crime: Like CCTV and mobile phones, blockchain technology enables better monitoring. Hence, we’re not necessarily seeing more crime; we're just able to detect it more efficiently. 🏦 3. Institutional players are the new privacy guardians: Similar to traditional banks, crypto institutions will increasingly provide privacy in transactions. This shift will be crucial as more institutional investors enter the market. 📈4. Stablecoins are driving institutional adoption: With 70% of blockchain movements, stablecoins are playing an important role in cross-border transactions. This trend is likely to accelerate in the upcoming bull market. 💹 5. Crypto as a proxy for the real economy: As institutional involvement grows, the crypto economy increasingly reflects real-world economic trends. This makes it an invaluable tool for economic analysis. 🌐 6. Flipping the script on crypto's reputation: Contrary to its "bad guy" image, the transparency of the crypto market actually would enable powerful monitoring and solving of international crimes. #Crypto #Compliance #FinTech #BlockchainTransparency
