Visionary, Community Violence Intervention Consultant, Grant Writer, Positive Behavior Support Consultant, Subject Matter Expert for the Institute for Intergovernmental Research, Gang Interventionist, Founder
One out of every ten kids that come through my program will reoffend. I know that fact everytime we do orientation. Imagine asking the toughest, gang or clique involved teen to sit down and create a vision board for the next five years of their lives. Most never even thought of a future past being a teenager. I always say “Let’s not look at where we are now. Let’s look at where we can be.” And that’s the approach that we take with our youth and families to create better outcomes. We create SMART goals and we walk with the families to get there. We have quite a few major projects coming that will address substance abuse, mental health, parent support and prevention/reunification of families. We are a one stop shop for free services…. I can’t wait to share what’s next. We have to keep getting the services to the people who need them if we want to see change in our community. Until I can say that no kid who comes through my program will reoffend, well we got work to do. #intervention #prevention #arkansas

Respect For All Week: The foundation for creating a safe and respectful school environment is being kind to our fellow community members and also being kind to ourselves. For Respect For All Week it is so important to create initiatives to address bullying and harrassment in a school environment. Through this initiative with the Mental Health Advocates Molly Tierney we explored how being kind starts with being kind to ourselves and taking care of our own well being. Then we explore how to be kind to others. This is so important especially for black and brown children. Kindness is also needed to manage the harm of internalizing oppression and #racialtrauma #blackmentalhealth #blackhistorymonth #bullyingprevention #bullyingawareness #inclusionmatters #equity #schoolsafety #socialwork #consortium #mentalhealthawareness

Love seeing this! I have so many thoughts on this, but here are my general takeaways: ❤️🩹Many children who have experienced trauma come to school with a dysregulated nervous system. This can make focusing, expressing needs appropriately, and learning extremely challenging. 💥When a child (or adult) is dysregulated, they must feel physically and psychologically safe for their nervous system to regulate. 💞Once they are regulated, they are no longer in a state of survival and are better able to absorb new information and take risks- these two actions will ultimately lead to higher achievement and greater self-efficacy. 💡The more our caregivers, teachers, and administrators can learn the complexities of trauma-informed care, the better they will be equipped with the skills needed to adjust their thinking and behaviors to create safe spaces where children can thrive.
The Florida Center for Early Childhood's school-based mental health therapist, Kerri Deatherage, LMHC, presented on Trauma-Informed Care at #AshtonElementary’ s Caregiver Support Night. We also had Jennifer Hatcher, LCSW, supervisor of the school-based mental health program, at our table! Appreciated seeing from the Sarasota County School District Debra Giacolone, Dr. Heather Wasserman and Ms. Mainelli as well as school board members Tom Edwards, Robyn Marinelli and Karen Rose. If you would like to arrange for a presentation from one of our experts please contact us www.TheFloridaCenter.org

May is both Mental Health Awareness Month & Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. This month, we'll explore how domestic violence impacts and intersects with mental health & the Asian Pacific American community. Education about the connections between domestic violence and mental health are essential to de-stigmatizing seeking help and improving access to support services, as well as understanding the cultural barriers individuals in the AAPI community may face when seeking help. Follow along as we work to promote awareness for these topics and share vital prevention tips during #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth & #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth! #AAPI #MHAM #intersections #dvprevention #violenceawareness

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 Behavioral Health Workforce Pipeline By: Jaime Elder Almost half of all Americans live in an area experiencing a mental health workforce shortage while the demand for services provided by psychiatrists, therapists, counselors and social workers is increasing. Florida has been especially hard-hit by this crisis and when people can’t access the mental health services they need, it can be hard for them to focus, to function and even get out of bed. “When it comes to mental health treatment, we are seeing an increase in the severity and the magnitude of youth being diagnosed with more severe cases of depression, anxiety, and other disorders,” said Andres Torrens, Chief Program Officer of Families First. BeWellPBC has been at the forefront of solution-oriented action and in July 2019, they hosted a Think Tank with seven local universities/colleges, School District of Palm Beach County, Children’s Services Council, Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network, and Palm Health Foundation to tackle workforce concerns like shortages in the behavioral health field and lack of diversity.
