Fully remote working isn’t for everyone. As a leader, you have to let go of control and trust your team. I’ve never asked my team to: - Clock in their hours - Micro manage their diary - Take breaks and lunch at specific times But they still: - Deliver exceptional client work - Get on as if they see each other in person every day - Feel happy and supported (I ask them this, a LOT 😅) Here’s how we’re supporting each other as a team even though some of us are 371 miles apart: 👉 Weekly 1:1s 👉 Twice weekly team meetings 👉 Day round support and collaboration in Slack 👉 Quick Huddles when we need to bounce ideas off each other 👉 Meet ups at client festivals and events throughout the year 👉 Summer and winter TC socials fully paid for including hotel and travel expenses Creating a great work culture for a fully remote team is hard. But if you create an environment where the team feel valued, supported and trusted… That’s when magic happens ✨
When the remote team get together 💃 From Manchester to Bristol to Glasgow, our team stretches far and wide! 🇬🇧 Despite the distance, we cherish our in-person gatherings. We go to a different city and have an adventure together for 24 hours! This meet-up in Manchester was one for the books: 👉 Mastered the challenges at the Crystal Maze 👉 Enjoyed cocktails with a stunning view of the Manchester skyline 👉 Ate deep dish pizza washed down with Aperol Spritz to celebrate the warm weather 👉 Partied in the city centre when the sun went down Back to virtual meetings for now, but eagerly waiting our next adventure together! 👀

I am doing writing exercises, so buckle up :) (context in the original post - not clickbait, but I am sharing opportunities from both organizers and ticket buyers perspective so separate-ish) Event fam with who're producing these big tent industry events with wide topic coverage - my two cents. If your event attendees are on small teams, but only one or two titles coming through, it may be worth exploring opportunities to provide value to other members of their team. What does an integrated, cost effective, "team retreat" experience look like for your event? Turn 1 attendee into 4 or 10(!)? There is an opportunity - one that may have been tried and failed plenty of times, but it can't ALWAYS fail, right? Lean into the package pricing for teams. Diversify your content and engagement strategies for the top 4-5 titles most commonly seen on these teams, nurture sub communities within your attendees based on responsibilities on the ground level of a business. Create the space, be smart about programming and scheduling, and you create a completely unique, but clearly integrated experience between the teams on their retreats and you, their host, in ways that capitalize on what already exists with your primary event. Your event might be the setting of their favorite team story. The margin might be a bit tighter on this type of experience for 5-10% of ticket holders, but guest count, floor time, and face time are meaningful metrics for vendors and these groups of attendees are in go-mode. Also - go slow and don't wreck your event by leaning to hard into this to quickly. Respect what you've got working for you. And let the folks who want to piggyback piggyback in peace if they so chose :-)

If you have a small, distributed team (<10), and you want to bring folks together IRL, find an established industry event that your whole team could benefit from attending. Carving out time before/during/after that event and hosting a team retreat that piggybacks on the established event could be a way to maximize your budget while checking off some of the key goals of getting together in-person.
