In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to work with the New York Mets organization for a season. I want to emphasize that for anyone aspiring to work in sports, it is not an easy path, and relationships truly matter. Whether it's with your supervisor or your coworkers, never underestimate the value of these connections. I have a deep appreciation for two individuals, Jenn and John, who have had a significant impact on me. They have shown me that having a full-time job in sports is not just about the title or the paycheck, but it's about the passion and dedication they bring to their roles. Jenn, who works as a high school math and special education teacher, has managed to make it work with her job at the Mets for the past 10 years. Similarly, John, who has been with the organization for 12 years, balances his full-time job as a head varsity basketball coach at St. John's Preparatory School alongside his role with the Mets. What these two remarkable individuals have in common is their passion for empowering others and their exemplary leadership skills. Even to this day, I can relate to them both professionally and personally. Jenn's role as an educator and her dedication to special needs students resonates with me, while John's coaching expertise and commitment to his players inspire me. The lesson here is that for those who aspire to have a full-time job in the sports industry, it's important not to get your hopes up too high and to be prepared to put in extra effort. Sometimes, fulfilling your dreams may involve juggling multiple jobs. But trust me, the more effort you put into life, the more fulfilling it will be. So keep up the hard work and never lose sight of your goals. And of course, it's always a great feeling when you can make it back to a game and catch up with old colleagues in person.

Do you know who came in 2nd in each of Michael Phelps's races? I don’t. The rewards for being excellent at something scale faster than you’d think. You get far more recognition (and money) for being the best than you do for being 10th-best or even 2nd best. It can be 10x or 100x. Phelps is now a household name and has earned a gazillion dollars in sponsorships because he was fractions of a second faster than someone else. Bad news: it’s harder than ever to commit to one craft and become world-class at it. Because there are so many opportunities and distractions. Good news: becoming the top 1% in the world at something is still simple. Continually reframe what you do to be so specific and narrowly-defined that you are the world’s best. Get clear about who you serve, what problem you solve, and how you solve it. ❌ Don’t say “I’m a marketer”. ✅ Say “I’m the #1 Facebook marketer helping aesthetic dentists in the UK expand their practice.” And don’t quit. The extra mile may be a lonely and tiresome journey, but it's never crowded. Give 3-5 years of focused attention to a skill, and you can become the best in your niche. Few people will stick it out that long. I had the pleasure of recently speaking at the Euroleague Basketball MBA programme in Berlin. Thanks again to Miguel Ferreira and Vincenzo Di Giuseppe for the kind invitation. Here were my three career takeaways from the chat. 1. On Patience and Obsession: "You need to be a bit obsessive. Everyone can tell you to follow your passion and find your dream quickly, but the truth is, it’s very difficult. You'll need patience, and it will take time. This doesn't sell books or dreams in the short term, but it’s the old-fashioned story that holds true." 2. On Consistency: "Consistency beats intensity. It’s not about being intensely focused for a short burst; it’s about making small, manageable changes and doing them consistently over a long period. The real competitive advantage is the ability to do something for 10 minutes a day for one year—something almost no one can sustain." 3. On Building Relationships: "When you’re trying to build a relationship with someone, get them to talk about themselves. People love speaking about themselves. Ask open-ended questions and listen. The power of listening is massively undersold. Start with one relationship, one interaction, and then scale it to many. Thanks Andy Frisella 🙏 In a "What have you done for me lately?" world, this hits home harder than most. ------------------------------------------------ The longer you fixate on your past wins... The less time you give yourself to create your future wins. This is most people's problem. They're voted prom king/queen. They make their first $100K in business. They win the high school championship game. They graduate college. They run a marathon. They get a promotion. Then they bask in the glory of these small wins for the rest of their life only to get their fucking ass beat in the long run by the people who continue to show up every day to compete and execute at a high level. I'm not saying you shouldn't celebrate your wins. If you worked your ass off and accomplished something of significance ... you absolutely should. But if you hold onto these wins for too long... Make room for your ego to creep in... ...and quit executing on the tasks that will help you make progress because you think you've already "made it”… I can guarantee you ... those wins will be your last. Understand that your wins are a result of the actions you took to create them. ...and if your plan is to keep winning... You need to put yourself back in the game and commit yourself to the actions necessary to materialize your future wins. I have a rule for myself. I call it the "24-Hour Rule." If I worked hard to create a win ... I celebrate. As anyone should. ...But after 24 hours have passed... I refocus and get aggressive about achieving my future wins. You and I have far more to accomplish. Don't take your eye off the ball at the first sign of success. Otherwise ... you'll be sitting at the bar with the rest of the prom kings and queens talking about how life fucked you. Life didn't fuck you. You did. That's the #truth.

It’s my favorite time of year. Yes, the awakening of spring is amazing. But I’m talking about the NFL Draft. Over 3 days in April, 255 of the best college athletes come one step closer to their dream. They are selected to play for an NFL team. For the fans it’s like Christmas, with helmets. As I watched the tears and overwhelming joy wash over player after player last night as they heard their name called. Many of these young men have overcome overwhelming challenges to get here.  It caused me to reflect. As with everything, there are some personal lessons to come away with. The process and the outcome are oftentimes out of our control. Do what is possible to guide the process.  But understand that we 100% control our inputs. How hard do we work to achieve our desired outcome? How hard do we prepare? How much do we want it? Do we stop when we encounter a challenge? Do we have a positive attitude and desire to win? I am personally at an interesting point. I have a lot of future in my career but am considered seasoned after 20 years in executive positions. Finding a new position is, well, challenging. To succeed with this, it is necessary to control the controllables (preparation, attitude, and effort), go into every game (interview) with the belief that I will win, and keep moving forward with the understanding that, like the players in the draft, one lucky team will recognize value and make the pick. 

Graduates- If you want a template on how to get to the top of any industry you decide on and the approach, then watch Tom Brady's Patriots HOF speech. My sporting idol, but more so because he lacked so many obvious, tangible physical skills that were deemed 'necessary' to survive in a sport as rough as the NFL. His work ethic has hardly been seen in sport before, his preparation and mental toughness, ditto. Graduates coming out of University who are feeling that 'only an Oxbridge/Ivy League candidate can get that role/opportunity', plse don't. Watch the Video and realise that this approach can and does transcend all industries, not just on the sporting field. AS A NEW YORK TRANSPLANT, SUPPORTING THE DETROIT LIONS HAS TAUGHT ME A THING OR TWO ABOUT DETERMINATION. Having never won a Super Bowl- or even getting close to winning one- they are are a force to be reckoned with as they want this win like no other team-despite difficult odds. Two years ago, the quarterback, Jared Goff, was "dumped" by the LA Rams and Detroit Lions Coach Dan Campbell-an underdog in the coaching arena- both came to town to build a team from scratch and take it to the Super Bowl. When asked to what he attributes his success, his answer is "the team has GRIT." I translate this lesson into my area of business development where the deals seem to be getting tougher, the costs of running a business are higher, and overall "work ethic" seems to be lacking. It's a tough world out there- and it seems to be getting tougher. But like the Lions, one learns the lesson of maintaining their goals and objectives and keeping their "eye on the prize"- and the prize is success no matter the challenges we face in today's world. I look forward to the Lions game on Sunday and the eyes of America are on this team.
