💄🎸💰 Taylor’s Tour P&L Today I’ve taken a guess at the financials for Taylor’s Australian tour. None of this is perfectly reliable, but there are plenty of news stories on different aspects so it is probably a decent guide. ***** Revenue 🎫 Tickets $140m (see yesterday’s post). The MCG stage cuts attendance a lot - Ed Sheeran was in the centre and had 109k per show compared to Taylor's 96k with a stage. 🧢 Merchandise. On the US leg of this tour, Taylor sold $200m of merch and $1b of ticket sales, so keeping that 20% ratio with a 50% profit margin (maybe it is more) gives $14m of merch profit. 🎰 Crown deal. This probably covers her staff stays (100 people for 10 days is worth about $500k), plus she is staying at the Crown Towers penthouse ($100k). Maybe Crown chips in a few million for naming rights. Costs 🏟️ Stadiums (staff, security, cleaning, power). While some concerts might cost a lot less, Taylor really needs these 2 venues because of their size, and she needs them for a long time - Brunton Avenue at the MCG was closed for a week for her 70 trucks to arrive. This also includes public liability insurance, which results in plenty of smaller events not being viable. Maybe a few mill per concert day plus some for the other setup days. 🎟️ Ticketmaster. Their cut for doing the tickets is reportedly worth up to 10% of the sales. Crazy! 📢 Promoter. Frontier Touring manages a lot of these arrangements, but given the tickets basically sold themselves they would probably earn the low/mid end of the standard 5-15% promoter fee range. 🚚 Transport. Reportedly in the vicinity of $1m a day for big shows. That stage is huge! 🪜 Equipment. As above, and it seems there isn’t enough time to move it from Melbourne to Sydney so there’s probably some duplication. 📢 Management. This goes to her company (13 Management), but there is a sizeable team making all of the (non-promoter) arrangements for her. 💃🏽 Production. There is a big list of people involved - the support act (Sabrina Carpenter), her band, dancers, sound engineers, lighting crew and so on. ©️ Royalties. She writes her own songs but some have co-writers. The deals are probably bespoke. It’s hard to imagine the co-writers get paid much for a concert play, but you never know. 📰 Publicity. Normally bands would need advertising but I imagine she only needs to shower the radio stations with a few free tickets. ***** The $68 million result is a 49% margin on ticket sales, which is in the 40-60% range I've seen mentioned for big concerts generally. Unfortunately for her, it only translates to US$44 million. Also, it is notable that there have been no reports of the Victorian Government paying her anything, whereas Coldplay were paid a mystery amount by the WA Government recently for the two Perth shows. Valued at $564.7 billion in 2023, it’s expected to skyrocket to $1.33 trillion in the next eight years. Concert industry trade magazine Pollstar released its 2024 Mid-Year report which showed a mixed performance in the live concert industry. While attendance was down 14.9%, higher ticket prices (+9.4%) and more overall shows (+16.7%) drove record revenue of $3.07 billion, up 8.7% year-over-year. Q3 saw stronger growth, with gross revenues hitting $5.68 billion (+14.1%) and ticket sales rising modestly by 2.6%. Coldplay led the Top 100 Touring Artists with $237.4 million gross from their "Music of the Spheres" tour, which remains the highest-grossing Rock tour of all time. Other top-grossing artists included Luis Miguel, Bad Bunny, Bruce Springsteen, and Madonna. An excellent experience that really shows what it is like driving larger vehicles on the road.

Interesting concept I have come across this morning - I have had the same thought come across my mind lately. The seminar I attended last week also said from the times of 10AM-2PM as those are work hours, and most people scroll when they are bored at work…but from a consumers perspective, I genuinely hate announcements/on sale/merch drops ect at 9AM-11AM because I never make them on time due to me being at work. Does my audience encounter the same frustrations? I’m finding it very imperative to scratch this “standard” to an extent - I am watching my analytics, I am seeing when followers of each platform are mainly online and interacting, and funny thing is EACH ACCOUNT I am working with is different! The algorithm changes EVERYDAY - so I agree I think it’s time to start rethinking strategy when it comes to optimal time to post for marketers. I think it’s time for us to start experimenting more - let’s lose the mindset of what we SHOULD do, and see what works best for the platform/account we are utilizing. #marketing #marketingcoordinator #marketingmanager

There needs to be some honest feedback on why we are seeing festivals/events cancelling. From running events over the past few years the simple issue is the costs outweigh the revenue and the work involved just isn't worth it. What are the cost issues? 1. Over regulation - too many permits, insurance increases, excess safety measures. Basically everyone covering themselves and no responsibility on the punter. 2. Artist costs and management - we saw some artists increase their fees by 25% in one year. 3. Wages increase - takes alot of people to pull and event together and the complexity of awards an increases makes it challenging. When you put all this in the mix you end up with a ticket price that becomes too challenging for the punter especially when money is tight. Smart operators won't run events at a loss or for a small profit.
