What an incredible two weeks!
Last Friday, I wrapped up my first Playmaker Game Design Camp. How did we do? I’m still going through all the great photos we’ve taken, but I think this picture says it all. Seeing kids come out of their shells as they unveiled their games and the gratitude from parents as they played… priceless.
When creating the Playmaker program, I wasn’t sure how it would resonate with the kids. We had a range of ages and skill sets, and game design is deep, rich, and complex. But kids everywhere consume games at a high rate. So, I met them where they were, taking a people-first approach to introduce them to game design. The draw of games is evident, but do they know why they are so compelling?
During the camp, I emphasized the importance of creating a good story and conflict. We talked about the mechanics of a great game. Whether building a game with paper or with code, I encouraged them to move from overthinking to building together so we could physically playtest their ideas. And then we playtested again. And again! Each time learning and making the games better. The proudest moment? There were times when, given the choice to play Nintendo or be on their phones, they chose to play the board games they created with each other. Score!
And speaking of playtesting… I need to transition into my upcoming game release for Jubileague. I will indeed review my notes and photos to do a proper recap of this experience with those who helped me pull this off. Then we’ll plan for the next iteration. So stick close! We have a winner in Playmaker, and you’ll be seeing more of it.
Keep creating the future you want to live in!
