Executives at tribally owned companies in West Michigan have been paying very close attention to a legal battle between a Black-owned automotive supplier and the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council. The council has long denied minority business enterprise certifications to tribal entities — and more recently to Detroit-based Piston Group — citing that despite being structured as minority owned holding companies, they had white men leading various business units, a practice that a Wayne County judge excoriated in her scathing verdict in favor of Piston Group. So, what’s next for the tribes? Find out in my exclusive for Crain's Grand Rapids Business. (And props to Kurt Nagl for his expert coverage of the Piston Group case for Crain's Detroit Business.) Side note: It’s somewhat remarkable that I have been covering or leading a team in reporting on this topic for more than five years and it appears no where nearer to resolution now than when it came to light.
