⚡ Last week I received shareholder updates from two Avonmore Developments portfolio companies. Good right? No.... ⚡These two companies are consistent in that they only send - always overly positive - shareholder updates when they want to raise more funding or occassionally need some document signing. One of these has been doing this to its original angels investors for 10+ years 🚨 ⚡The CEO of another portfolio company is very active on LinkedIn. I assume from this that the company is doing ok but they haven't written a shareholder update for 3 years even though asked. Investors do notice these things 🤓 ⚡ So if you raise money from external investors, do keep all of them (and not just your board) informed of progress, both good and bad. Quarterly is good, but even once a year will do if you are later-stage. ⚡If nothing else this helps keep track of these investors. For example, in one recent exit the company found that they no longer had up-to-date contact details for a key early shareholder, which then nearly scuppered the deal. ⚡As well as being good business practice, don't let a lack of shareholder comms mean that, at a critical juncture for your business, you get 📻 silence from your investors... #angelinvesting #shareholdercommunications

One job of a lead investor is to work closely with founders to raise the follow-on round. Over the last 14 years, I’ve helped raise a ton of rounds, and one thing is almost universally true: founders always overestimate the chances of each investor converting. Most walk out of an initial pitch feeling like they have a 33%-50% chance when it’s really 1%-10%.
