Did you know that Canada's favorite coffee shop 🇨🇦 was founded by a hockey player?🏒☕ Tim Horton wasn't just a star ice hockey player who played 24 seasons in the NHL but also a savvy businessman with a vision. In 1964, while still playing pro hockey, Horton opened his first coffee and donut shop in Hamilton, Ontario. What started as a single coffee and donut shop grew rapidly. By 1967, there were three Tim Hortons restaurants. Tim Hortons cultivated a strong national identity by associating itself with Canadian culture. Its signature "double-double" coffee became a cultural staple in Canada. The brand's emphasis on "Canadian values" contributed to its wide appeal. Today, Tim Hortons has over 4,000 locations across Canada and is expanding globally. In 2014, Tim Hortons merged with Burger King🍔, creating the world's fifth-largest fast-food restaurant chain. We have been working on a huge project for six months with our friends at Tourism Training Australia for an industry we love and can't live without - our precious #hospitality industry! It's an industry that has brought us all so much joy, be it our daily coffee, a hot pie at the footy or a sandwich on the run, a delicious farm-to-plate fine dining experience, a holiday in the country or the beach, a takeaway or delivery on a slack night in, a glass of wine, a cold beer at your local, a fresh juice or a mindblowing cocktail, and so many many more unforgettable experiences shared with loved ones, colleagues and friends or on our own. Hundreds of thousands of people apply their skills and time to grow, pick, fish, prepare, truck, manufacture, make, cook, bake, pour, serve, clean, transact, entertain, review ( and yes, regulate), and do all this for us, day in and day out. We kept hearing heartbreaking stories of financial hardship - of businesses forced to close their doors and lay off staff, and of others acquiring, thriving and growing. It didn't make sense. So we have decided to do what we do best—offer a safe place to learn, upskill, collaborate, and innovate, address challenges together, identify opportunities, and leverage technology and new ways inspired by others. We are creating an online community that's free and open 24/7 for anyone who cares about the future of the hospitality industry. Everyone is welcome. We kick off with an Innovation Summit on 12 - 16 August 2024, bringing together a highly diverse cross-section of hospitality industry professionals to share their insights in four major areas of focus this year: workforce, sustainability, finance and ops, and the customer. Each panel is followed by a "Have Your Say", where you can leave a comment on the issues board or join the conversation. We will gather this data, share it with the community, and use it to inform the hospo innovation agenda, program, and activities for the year. Ignite Hospo runs from August 24 to August 25. It is not a conference. It is a twelve-month program that flexes to meet your busy life and needs when you need it. Great piece in the Financial Times about the slow and steady recovery of the British pub 🍺 There's an interesting idea here that the pub is not a fixed thing - it changes and adapts to suit the needs of the time it’s in. The increase of pubs selling food has meant this is what consumers expect from their boozers now, and so many groups are changing their venues to align with this. Particularly heartening is companies like Heineken "reopening 62 [pubs] that closed in recent years and investing £40m on this and other refurbishments, such as improving gardens and expanding kitchens." McDonald's sells burgers but they don't consider themselves in the food industry. I buy homes but I don't consider myself a real estate investor. What? McDonald's buys and holds restaurants to rent out to franchisees as a passive source of income. Their royalties are marginal in comparison to the rental income. My revenue comes from the management of the properties, not from the buying and selling of real estate. If you partner with me, YOU are the real estate investor. If you go after it alone, you're competing with every other hospitality provider out there, including big hotel brands.
