Set in Harlem in the 1970s, the film tells the love story of two young people whose lives are impacted by racial injustice. CAA is back in the news again. Terrence Howard is suing CAA for conflict of interest. His hit series “Empire” did not yield him the payout commensurate with its success. An Agent is hired to get the best deal possible for an Actor. If the Agent has a side deal to share in the profits, CAA is then performing, not as an agent, but as an owner, neglecting fiduciary responsibility to Mr Howard. It’s plainly a conflict of interest. Further CAA fails to disclose to investors it solicits for a film or series the fees it charges to the production company or the investor. These fees can impact artistic integrity, and cheat the investor of their full value of their investment return. Actors rely on their agent to get paid Make sure you get paid with a legitimate agent. Most Caucasians would be set for life for the success of the series “Empire.” CAA purchased ICM a couple of years ago and in doing so could be excused accused of a monopoly hold on the exclusive talent. And, operating in an anti competitive environment with a unfair hold on the industry’s talent. If Actors agreed to only accept offers through CAA and CAA does not reveal its participating in profit participation, Fund raising fee income, trimming Actor’s cut motivated by profit and still demanding Actors pay them from their proceeds, they are committing fraud and ruining opportunities for all. Further, CAA was thought to have coached Fan Bing Bing, China’s most famous actress at the time in 2018, how to avoid paying tax with multiple contracts on a single film that found allowed her to misrepresent her actual earnings on her films to China’s taxation authorities. CAA, in effect pushed their responsibility of getting industry leading deal for their A list client the dependency of defrauding tax agencies. It destroyed her China Mainland career. Is drama at the bottom of the subject hierarchy in your school? Yes it’s a familiar story to most of us. Drama mocked, scoffed at, called a ‘mickey mouse’ subject, not a ‘proper’ subject. The snobbery is alive and well. SMT teams putting up with it rather than endorsing it, pushing it as a stress-buster, a club, happy to market the shows but actively steering young people away from A level study. English co-opting Shakespeare (who was an actor). Arts careers de-legitimised. Arts teachers kept out of leadership posts. Drama as preserve of the wealthy - a nice to have. A toy. A bit of froth. Thing is - directing, play-writing, acting requires not only a deep sensitivity to language, but proper intellectual rigour and precision. It’s not about those ‘soft skills’ (a term I personally dislike). Not only are these people far intellectually superior than any I know - Cate Blanchette, Sam Mendes, Jez Butterworth, Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, Caryl Churchill, Wole Soyinka, Sam Holcroft, Jessica Swale, but they are, or were, makers of theatre; nobel laureates, storytellers. When AI takes its foothold schools had better catch up - a bot will be taking care of the equations and formulae - but the bot will struggle to communicate the nuance, depth and humanity in the great plays, productions and performances.
