*Embracing our Diversity* Yesterday on the central day of Pride Month, I had the opportunity to share and reflect on fundamental concepts such as intersectionality, power and privilege in the Lima office. It is important to mention that during the last four weeks, the Pride+ BRG has been able to deploy all the hard-planned virtual and hybrid events to continue consolidating inclusive and safe spaces, thus demonstrating our commitment to diversity here at #ThermoFisherScientific In the time I had in the morning we talked about: intersectionality, power and privilege, since as Marcelo Baudino says, "we cannot really get involved without first having recognized our privileges". And it is from our professional sphere, where we spend most of our time every day, where we can/should also be *agents of change* and take advantage of these spaces to learn and relearn. "Intersectionality" helps us realize that each human being is the sum of many factors that define our identity, a way of looking at our realities and how they affect each person differently. Talking about "privilege", being such a personal and broad topic, can be summarized as something "you haven't had to go through" rather than something you have gone through or had. The "Power/Privilege Wheel" (by Sylvia Duckworth's) helped me visualize and reflect on how our life experiences may differ from others. Talking about these topics, although uncomfortable at first, is crucial for our personal and professional evolution. In a recent speech commemorating Juneteenth, I wanted to connect the spirit of freedom and progress to a vital topic for our workplaces: the difference between diversity and inclusion. Vernā Myers, perfectly captured this sentiment when she said, "Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance." Imagine your workplace as a dance floor. Diversity is ensuring everyone's invited to the party – a beautiful mosaic of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. But inclusion? That's making sure everyone feels welcome to join the dance. It's about fostering an environment where every individual feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute their unique steps to the company's rhythm. As we reflect on Juneteenth's legacy, let's ask ourselves: How do we create workplaces where everyone feels comfortable stepping onto the dance floor? Over the past month, I've been inspired by countless posts on LinkedIn that have celebrated diversity, advocated for inclusion, and championed acceptance. Today marks the closure of Pride Month, but it's important to remember that the spirit of this month extends far beyond these 30 days. The essence of Pride Month is about acknowledging and appreciating our differences, about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued for who they are. #Diversity and #inclusion aren't just buzzwords - they are fundamental to a healthy society and a thriving workplace.
