On a warm morning on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), a small group gathered to launch the Quandamooka Arts and Culture Centre (QUAMPI) for the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC). Nestled between the beach and the bush, the site came to life as dancers from Yulu Burri Ba welcomed visitors - offering a taste of the talent that will soon be celebrated at this world-class venue. "QUAMPI is a community space, a cultural space and a public offering all responding to place. A strong sense of community welcome and ownership has been a critical component of the design," COX Director, Richard Coulson “It’s been a tremendous honour to work together with Quandamooka Elders and community members since the project began seven years ago. They've been incredibly generous in sharing their knowledge of people, place, and culture,” says COX Associate Director, Ali Farmer. On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Amapola Arts celebrates the strength, resilience, and rich cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples, especially the Taíno. Both Nino and I, as proud Taínos, honor the legacy of our ancestors, who were the original inhabitants of the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, Cuba, and beyond. The Taíno people were the first to encounter European settlers, and despite the attempts to erase our culture, the spirit of the Taíno remains strong. Through our art and storytelling, we carry the traditions of our people—celebrating the beauty of our connection to the land and our deep sense of community. Amapola Arts is more than just a creative venture; it’s a space where we weave together the past and the present, keeping alive the essence of who we are as Taínos. Today, we honor our heritage, not just in remembrance, but through the act of creation—sharing the stories, art, and traditions that live within us. As we reflect on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we invite you to learn about and celebrate the enduring legacy of Indigenous cultures, and to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities across the world, advocating for sovereignty, cultural preservation, and justice. With every piece we create, we honor the Taíno within us, and through Amapola Arts, we keep that legacy alive. Photo credit: https://lnkd.in/eZT3Nju4

A monument is a type of structure that was explicitly created to commemorate a person or event, or which has become relevant to a social group as a part of their remembrance of historic times or cultural heritage, due to its artistic, historical, political, technical or architectural importance. In Virtual World its very easy to see monuments but very difficult to create it but output is always impressive #ANDEvents #ANDIdeas #andlive #virtualevents #virtualevent #virtualconference #virtualassistant #onlineevent #online #onlinebusiness #onlineadvertising #monument #monuments

#Op_ed: #Ashenda: The importance of honoring cultural heritage in its authentic form In his op-ed, Abdisa A. Kalbesa, a medical science student at Edith Cowan University in Australia, discusses the importance of preserving cultural traditions in their authentic form, focusing on the Ashenda festival celebrated by the #Tegaru people. The piece emphasizes the significance of respecting cultural heritage without appropriation or exploitation. Abdisa argues that traditions like Ashenda should be appreciated for their intrinsic value to the communities that practice them, rather than being altered or commercialized. The article concludes by calling for the celebration of cultural diversity while preserving traditions in their original state. Abdisa suggests that this approach allows for a deeper understanding and respect for the cultural identities represented by these practices. https://lnkd.in/emNwk4Mv

When I was completing my anthropology studies, one of the working assumptions of my thesis was the definition of an ethnic group. A term that refers to the social and cultural characteristics, backgrounds, or experiences shared by a group of people, and most importantly, that set them apart from others. The working theory, then, was you could only feel part of a tribe if there were “others”, other tribes or ethnic groups around you from which to stand apart. I look at the concept of clubs, so common in the anglo-world, much less so in other countries, and I wonder: in a society where all barriers have been (or gave the illusion to be ) broken down, are we all looking for new ways and places to belong to something greater than us? Something to represent us, a place where we can find those of similar taste, beliefs, habits? In a society where we are not, or should not, be defined by gender, orientation, religion, class, ethnicity, money, are we at a loss for our tribe? I have been long obsessed with the need to create such clubs in Italy - Alessandro De Nicola being my partner in crime here – but I am filled with questions on the purpose they serve, on the role they should not have, and on the huge opportunity they offer to many companies and brands. One most do not seem to be capturing at the moment. Thoughts anyone ?
