A skyscraper topples: The Trianon tower in Frankfurt is a 670 million project, a silver tower dominating the skyline, and most of all - insolvent. With energy and water supply difficulties, even the grandeur of architecture can hold little against it.  When rains flood cities and towns habitually and yet water is scarce only a few months later, not only the existing infrastructure is affected. We must plan expansions, and building projects accordingly.  The industry must not only adapt to the new climate, but to new regulations and societal expectations. Innovative approaches are a must. Integrating natural capital into project planning and turning additional costs into valuable investments in nature-positive infrastructure pave the way to a sustainable future. This should be a great event - not just about sustainable urbanism,but also the how we design and create places that reduce carbon consumption and the impact on how we live and work. Does it depend on a joined up approach to planning and infrastructure? How can individual smaller projects make a difference? What tools are there to evaluate the carbon footprint of projects?

“Industry wide frameworks” 🤝 “Sharing knowledge and experiences” 🧠 “Better relationships with our supply chain partners” 🌱 “Expanded material databases and marketplaces” 🏗️ Just a few of the ideas shared this morning in response to Steve Gilchrist’s question: what do we need to do in 2024 to push the material reuse agenda forward? It was a pleasure to host a circular materials roundtable at our London Studio, along with Willmott Dixon and FORE Partnership, followed by a tour of FORE's development, TBC. London. We took a deep dive into the successes, setbacks, challenges and opportunities around material reuse, after Gareth Atkinson showcased the 318 Oxford Street and TBC. London projects which have been at the heart of a deal that saw 20 tonnes of steel reused, brokered on the back of a bike. With rising temperatures and countries worldwide overshooting their carbon targets, reducing the embodied carbon of our structures is more important than ever. Thanks to all who joined us! Thank you Kara Thompson for this neat summary of the recent City Architecture Forum event on retrofit and reuse of buildings. As it says, the statistics I presented on "the state of the circular economy" were... depressing! Yes, the construction industry generates 62% of the UK's waste and 32% of all waste sent to landfill. Crucially, 13% of construction materials are diverted straight to waste without being used. What I want to spur on in our sector by baring the hard truths, is simply less talk and more action in this area. Such an uplifiting conclusion too : With a focus on circular economy practices, flexible design solutions, and proactive engagement with stakeholders, the possibilities for transformation are endless. It's time to dance to a new tune and create a built environment that not only meets our needs today but also ensures a sustainable future for generations to come. #CityofLondon #CircularEconomy #ReuseRevolution

Sustainable building strategies must be tailored for the differing roles of multiple actors across government, civil society, and the building sector, and across countries and settings.
