Kris Geerken, MHA is one of our amazing Master of Health Administration (MHA) Alumna, MSU Denver Faculty member and co-director of Changing the Narrative, a leading anti-ageism initiative. She says research shows that negative beliefs about aging - our own or other people's - are detrimental to our health. "It actually can accelerate cognitive decline, increase anxiety, it increases depression. It can shorten our lifespans by up to seven-and-a-half years," she says, adding that a 2020 study showed that discrimination against older people, negative age stereotypes, and negative perceptions around one's own age, cost the health care system $63 billion a year. Still, beliefs can change."When we have positive beliefs about age and aging, those things are all flipped," Geerken says, and we tend to age better. In a new study, University of Washington Department of Health Systems and Population Health PhD graduate Shanise Owens explores how redlining has contributed to significant disparities in wealth and health outcomes across generations. "I hope my work helps decision-makers think long-term. We always want to do these short individual fixes. But if we think about prevention, prevention is like the long game. What we're reading: "Social Media and Adolescent Health," a consensus study report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Social media has been fully integrated into the lives of most adolescents in the U.S., raising concerns among parents, physicians, public health officials, and others about its effect on mental and physical health. Over the past year, an ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine examined the research and produced this detailed report exploring that effect and laying out recommendations for policymakers, regulators, industry, and others in an effort to maximize the good and minimize the bad. https://lnkd.in/eEV3HnMt

Individuals with physical health concerns made up the largest and fastest growing of five subgroups of individuals who died by suicide in the United States over roughly twenty years, according to an analysis led by Weill Cornell Medicine in collaboration with Columbia University, UC Berkeley School of Public Health, the University of Hong Kong and University of Kentucky investigators. “The discovery of a “hidden” or “invisible” suicide risk group that is not only the largest of the five risk groups profiled, but is already accessing medical care, provides us with a key opportunity to intervene and potentially save lives,” said Timothy T. New research published today suggests that feelings of discomfort and unsafety are preventing some young people from being physically active. The study, led by our researchers at Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, explores how 55 young people aged 12 to 21 feel about engaging in physical activity such as sports, exercise and walking in public places.  The paper is published in BMC Public Health.
