'No home, no bed, no security and no stability – being homeless is exhausting and affects every part of a vulnerable young person’s life.’ – Centre Point UK In 2022-2023 a staggering 135,800 16-24 year olds in the UK were homeless or at risk of homelessness. Experiencing such instability at a crucial and evolving time in one's life can have enduring repercussions, impacting mental health, disrupting education and hindering job prospects. As a company focused on employment, we recognise the challenges not having a fixed address can pose to someone looking for a job, as well as the devastating emotional impact homelessness can have on someone's ability to secure and maintain a job. Centre Point is a charity dedicated to ending youth homelessness, their mission is to eradicate homelessness by 2037. They offer transformative support to those experiencing homelessness, one of their services is counselling sessions which provide vital support needed to recover from past traumas and enable them to move forward with their lives. Earlier this year we launched our ESG policy and outlined our commitment to actively engage with our local communities and strive to make a positive impact. We are also a business deeply committed to mental health and well-being and so this year, as part of our ongoing efforts, we have chosen to contribute to the well-being of those in need during this Christmas season and will be purchasing and gifting counselling sessions to Centre Point service users. Homelessness is a complex problem with deeply rooted systemic causes. Because of this, it needs a creative approach with complex solutions. Today, I had the pleasure of discussing my new passion project (trial project) once again with the junior school principal, whose support has been instrumental in our journey. Thanks to her guidance, the Happy Hobby Hour Junior team gained confidence and grew significantly in its early stages when HHHJ was just a trial project open to our family and friends only. She connected us with the right people and departments, providing the crucial support we needed. Since then, we’ve expanded to over four countries, raised $5,000 for Children's Hospital Foundation, inspired over 500 youth, partnered with more than 50 businesses, built an online community of over 300, and created three paid programs to support HHHJ projects and help children achieve their goals. Today's discussion provided further insights and highlighted the growing demand for our initiative. As we continue to explore opportunities with more schools, corporations, and community groups, our goal is to support students facing modern challenges such as social pressures, academic stress, media influence, and lack of support systems. Addressing these issues is crucial for tackling mental health concerns and preventing risky behaviors. I’m excited about the future and the potential impact we can make together! We couldn’t agree more with this NPC (New Philanthropy Capital) report: collaborating to understand the role of digital services and established interventions in supporting mental health is essential, and we’re thrilled that Best For You is featured as an example of cross-sector partnership. Best For You is run in partnership by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, West London NHS Trust and CW+ and partners with over 75 other organisations to provide an innovative model of care that transforms young people’s experiences of accessing mental health support. The NPC report identifies areas for long-term positive change, including preventative work and early intervention. Best For You provides instant digital support for young people (including signposting), as well as bespoke offers for young people on NHS waiting lists. We’re also thrilled to work with Imperial College London to evaluate Best For You, including our digital resources for young people, to provide some of the much-needed evidence on the effectiveness of digital mental health interventions that’s highlighted in the report.
