This message is succinct and strikes at the heart of the causes of the global refugee crisis. His appeal for help from governments around the world (and one assumes from the UN), is reflective of the hope of most refugees. But, the problem is massive, and it remains a low priority for many countries. If one counts domestically displaced people, the number of refugees is near 100 million. Predictions are that this number will continue to grow. Indeed, the issue is likely to be central to the US Presidential election this year; particularly when you consider that 250,000 people were detained by US immigration authorities in Dec 2023 alone. With national resources focused on defense, rising cost of living, conflicts around the globe, and climate change, the resources available to support refugees are woefully inadequate. To find out more about the refugee crisis and what governments are doing about it, listen to Episode 23 of 'Spartan Spirit - Best for the West'. Today is World Refugee Day. Every day, all over the world, people are forced to leave their home country in search of a safer life for themselves and their families. They leave to escape war, persecution and other serious human rights violations. Under the Refugee Quota Programme Aotearoa New Zealand welcomes 1,500 refugees a year. This does not include the hundreds of people in Aotearoa granted refugee status after seeking asylum here or those still waiting to be granted refugee status. Here we have compiled some resources to help you learn more about the experiences of former and current refugees here in Aotearoa, and the unique and significant contributions they make to society. https://lnkd.in/g6666rdj

Watch this short film, words, reality. A must watch from Migrant Help 🧡 for #RefugeeWeek.
How does it feel to leave your home behind? What would you take? Join us this Refugee Week as we reflect on the impossible choices faced by millions of refugees. Our film ‘Leaving’ brings to life the beautiful words of the poet Momtaza Mehri, narrated by the wonderful Adjoa Andoh while shining a light on the harrowing reality of forced displacement. No-one chooses where they are born, or the struggles or conflict they are born into. No-one chooses to be a refugee. They deserve hope and understanding from us all. #WorldRefugeeDay #RefugeeWeek #RefugeesWelcome #SupportPeopleSeekingAsylum
