Reducing emissions from farming entails large upfront capex, while environmental goals imply no further expansion of farmland. 29th September, International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (FLW), jointly convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). - FAO's 2023 report shows that 13.2% of food is lost between harvest and retail, while UNEP estimates that 17% of food is wasted between retail and consumption. - Together, this accounts for 30% of global food production going to waste. - If we could save just HALF of this wasted food, it could be enough to feed every hungry person on the planet. - This would significantly reduce 8-10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and cut down 38% of energy usage.
