In the lead up to International Women’s Day, Apostle’s new Head of Sustainable Investment Kylie Parkyn sat down with The Australian Financial Review's Lucy Dean to share her career journey into sustainable investing, insights for other young professionals in the sector and how Apostle’s investment strategies are pushing for greater equality.   Kylie’s key insights which can be applied to both investment strategies and career progression are:   ⚡ Don’t mistake arrogance for confidence and remember there’s more than one way to be a leader.   ⚡ Patience, resilience and persistence is critical to making long term change and bringing others along on that journey.   ⚡ Make timely decisions but prioritise long-term, sustainable goals over immediate but fleeting successes. It is crucial to acknowledge when a sector is underperforming and to intervene rather than hoping for a turnaround. However, perfecting the timing of those calls takes experience and the wisdom to embrace both the wins and losses gracefully to learn from those experiences and build stronger more sustainable investment strategies.   ⚡ Pushing for diversity does not mean that you get less qualified leaders. Research shows that women actually need to be more qualified than men to be even considered for the same role. Currently she is advising Achmea Investment Management on the acceleration of their impact investing proposition. She was founding MD of FMO Investment Management BV, mobilizing private capital at scale for the SDGs. Yvonne worked at FMO for 22 years and held various positions there, including Director Private Equity, Manager Credit Analysis and Manager Business Development. Earlier she worked at ABN AMRO Bank. She holds a master’s degree in business economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since 2022 Yvonne chairs the Netherlands Advisory Board on impact investing. She is a member of the Supervisory Board of Incofin Investment Management and holds several other supervisory/advisory positions.
