The more I travel internationally, the deeper my appreciation grows for South Africa and the broader African continent. We often fall into the trap of criticizing our own country - the airports, the banks, the service, even the weather! But with each international adventure, I'm struck by how much we truly have to offer. Beyond the Familiar: Take our airports, for example. Yes, there's always room for improvement, but compared to some international facilities, they're quite good. And don't even get me started on airport lounges! Some international ones resemble my granny's living room - all doilies and stale cookies. Here in South Africa, the lounges are welcoming and comfortable. Friendliness Makes a Difference: South Africans are renowned for their warmth and hospitality. Need directions? Just ask - you'll likely get a friendly smile and helpful advice. Contrast that with some international airports, where a request for assistance might elicit a growl or a dismissive wave. A Feast for the Senses: Let's not forget the food! South Africa boasts a vibrant culinary scene, offering incredible variety at reasonable prices. Can you imagine paying R180 for a cappuccino in Europe and still not being guaranteed a good cup? Here, delicious and affordable coffee is readily available. Wine: A Global Contender: And the wines! South African wines are world-class. Even our "worst" bottle often surpasses what I've encountered abroad. Celebrating Africa: My travels have shown me that South Africa isn't an isolated gem; the entire African continent is brimming with beauty, culture, and potential. This isn't to say there aren't challenges we face within South Africa and Africa as a whole. However, by appreciating our strengths and recognising the opportunities around us, we can all play a part in shaping a brighter future for the continent.
