Instructure have published their annual 'EdTech Top 40' - highlighting the tools US school districts, teachers and students engaged with in 23/24. Never ceases to amaze me how many different tools are used. One question that comes to mind is whether we will see schools consolidate the tools they use, aided by the growth of 'super-apps'? In the short-term the proliferation of AI tools has increased the number of distinct tools used (up 8% in 23/24)

What is the evidence supporting AI tutors and teachers? This well researched study found three very significant benefits: 1. Enhanced Learning Outcomes: Students who received personalized learning paths achieved better learning outcomes compared to those who received traditional instruction. 2. Increased Engagement and Motivation: Personalized learning paths were found to increase student engagement and motivation. 3. Recently, I had the opportunity to write about the basics of instance segmentation - a computer vision technique very close to my heart. In college, my friends and I worked on a project to monitor student attentiveness in class. We used instance segmentation to identify students in a video of them listening to a mock class. What would happen if a teacher graded an exam, handed it to the student, and then it was immediately thrown away? Sure, the student and teacher would know the grade for that exact assignment But what happens when the teacher needs to write progress reports of all the cumulative assessments. Or when the student wants to understand mid-semester what they’re struggling with in preparation for final exams The teacher and the student would be left with nothing—no insights, no data to improve learning, no direction for growth. This is exactly what can happen when we use AI to evaluate assignments And fail to fully extract and use the valuable analytics it can generate. While AI can save teachers time by automating grading, If we don’t leverage the deeper insights it provides like identifying patterns of understanding and areas of difficulty We're leaving teachers and students in the dark.
