I should add that these are PAID internships. Not only does this make our internships accessible to those who can’t afford to work for free, there is a noticeable difference in the quality and consistency of their work over the span of the semester. It is a lot easier to give more to an organization when they are compensating you for your time. At the very least, I believe we need to be paying interns enough to cover the indirect expenses that come with a job (gas, meals, clothing, etc.).
The GLO Center's new class of interns starts this week! You can get to know them here: https://lnkd.in/g56d-m8Q

During National Intern Day last month, I could work on an Instagram project creating stories for 3 days and a Reel for the @maspethfederalsavings Instagram, all aimed to showcase a more personal side of our company. I could conduct interactive interviews with 15 of our interns, asking them a mix of fun personal and insightful professional questions to create a wholesome image of our work environment. If you are interested, you can check out the reel that I shared below where our MFS interns share their perspective about the company. It's always exciting for me to jump into new social media projects like this one! #SocialMedia #Marketing
📣 To celebrate Intern Day, we wanted to hear from our interns about the first thing that comes to mind when they think about Maspeth Federal Savings! And now we're curious to know what YOU think too! ✨ So tell us, when someone mentions MFS, what thoughts come to your mind? Comment here! #MaspethFederalSavings #MFS #CommunityBanking #InternDay

▶ Excited to share this video featuring the incredible Stacia Maynard , who brings insights from the NACE conference. Two powerful takeaways she mentions I encourage you to do your own research on: 1️⃣ Restorative Practices: which can significantly benefit you college career centers by fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that enhances student engagement and overall well-being. 2️⃣ "Yes, And" Concept: No matter what someone says to you, even if it's negative, you reply with "yes, and." This simple phrase can steer the conversation in a positive direction and allow you to add additional thoughts. 💡 Stacia highlights how reframing discussions around skills vs. degrees can benefit both students and employers. Instead of viewing these elements as opposing forces, adopting a "yes, and" approach can address the diverse needs of learners. Yes, traditional degrees provide structured learning and foundational knowledge And, practical skills gained through internships, projects, and real-world experiences are crucial in bridging the gap between theory and application.

We must double down and prioritize three key areas for students to achieve financial empowerment: access to no-cost financial education for students and families; access to financial services; and access to mentors, scholarships, internships, and other career-focused connections. In this Fortune OpEd, EVERFI Co-Founders Tom Davidson and Ray Martinez share insights into how public and private sectors can work together to support students' lifelong financial well-being.

A direct quote from the NACE Position statement: "Particularly troubling, NACE research has also found that all college students are not equitably represented in internships (Inequity in Internships, NACE, 2021). According to survey data, women, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation students were underrepresented in paid internships. In 2022, NACE followed up on that initial analysis and the internship data from 187 employers demonstrated nearly identical inequities. Again, women, Black, and Hispanic students were significantly underrepresented as a proportion of paid interns. Taken together, the research shows that white, male, and continuing generation students are disproportionally overrepresented in paid internships. Providing more paid internships for underrepresented populations will lead to greater access, opportunity, and success for participating students; help fill critical roles throughout the employment landscape; and lead to needed diversification of the workforce." Internships are a high-impact practice that colleges and universities should be paying significant attention to and identifying action steps to close equity gaps.
NACE Director of Research and Public Policy Mary Gatta recently spoke with NPR and WBUR's Here & Now about our position statement advocating for all internships to be paid and the actions we believe Congress must take to make this a reality. https://ow.ly/j4oJ50Pq5HK
