Happy Labor Day, Michiganders! Labor Day is "an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers," according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The holiday was established during the Industrial Revolution by activists who fought for better treatment of workers, who often faced long hours, low wages, and unsafe conditions. At MICEO, we continue to build on the work of our predecessors by raising awareness about the benefits of employee ownership for selling owners, workers, and the community. *Good morning* 🌞 HR Word of the Day - *Proletarianization* In Marxism, proletarianization is the social process where individuals transition from being employers or self-employed to becoming wage labor for an employer, regarded as a significant form of downward social mobility. *Marx's concept* Marx connected proletarianization to capital accumulation. As capital grew, so did the working class. The expansion of capitalist markets involved primitive accumulation and privatization, concentrating wealth in fewer hands. This led a growing population to depend on wage labor due to a lack of assets or alternative income sources. Marx envisioned this contradiction fostering revolution, with the proletariat eventually overthrowing the bourgeoisie. *In modern capitalism* E.P. Thompson's classic study, *The Making of the English Working Class* (1963), delves into the meanings, struggles, and conditions of the emerging proletariat. Proletarianization in advanced capitalism is often described as extending the logic of factory labor to services and intellectual professions. In many countries, entitlement to unemployment benefits is contingent on actively seeking work, compelling individuals to pursue employment as salaried or self-employed workers. Geographically and historically, proletarianization is closely tied to urbanization, involving the migration of people from rural to urban areas in search of waged work. *Have a Great HR Day* 🤓 #hrwordoftheday #proletarianization #continouslearning #selfemoyed #unemployment #urbanization #capitalaccumulation #downwardsocialmobility #geography #historically #individuals

Earlier today, the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, Hon Brooke van Velden, provided an update on proposed changes to the Holidays Act 2003 to increase certainty and reduce complexities. Proposed changes include pro-rating sick leave and a change to how annual leave entitlements are provided, moving from an entitlement system to an accrual system. The proposed accrual system aims to “help avoid the complex calculations that regularly stump payroll software and should therefore reduce compliance costs for employers.” An exposure draft of the Bill will be released for targeted consultation with those affected in September 2024. Reflecting on the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Shaping the Future of Work💁 As we mark another Labour Day , it's essential to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day and the journey it represents for workers around the globe. Labour Day stands as a testament to the resilience, unity, and ongoing struggle of the labor movement. Global Deal Case Study 5 : Social dialogue, short-time work and COVID-19 in Sweden. Although COVID-19 brought unprecedented challenges, it wasn't the first instance where companies and workers confronted mass lay-offs in Sweden. In response to the 2008 financial crisis, Swedish social partners had already devised a mechanism known as "short-time work" to address short-term shocks to employment. Short-time work refers to a reduction in an employee’s hours of work. During periods of short-time work, an employee’s wage is typically reduced to reflect the reduction in working hours. Yet wage reductions happen at a much lower rate than working hours. Case 5 of the Flagship Report illustrates how the Swedish government later extended the approach called ‘short-time work’ to become a country-wide policy, which proved to be beneficial when the pandemic started. Happy Labor Day 2024! It's worth reflecting on how this holiday has evolved since its inception in 1894. Originally established to celebrate the achievements of American workers and the labor movement, Labor Day emerged from a time of intense struggle for better working conditions and fair wages.Today, while many still enjoy barbecues and time off, the nature of work has dramatically changed. For business owners and entrepreneurs, the concept of a "day off" is often foreign. The rise of technology and global markets means work never truly stops. This shift reflects both the opportunities and challenges of modern business. As we celebrate Labor Day, let's acknowledge the dedication of those who keep our economy moving forward, often sacrificing personal time for their passion and vision. To all the hardworking individuals out there, whether you're taking a break or not this Labor Day, your efforts are recognized and appreciated. #LaborDay2024 #Entrepreneurship #BusinessOwnership

May Day May Day We have come a long way since our independence and Hock Lee Riot. Nowadays Workers’ Welfare and Safety is being genuinely managed better. The Workers are the backbone of the economy and they should be lauded and appreciated. The recent redundancies in technology companies and others leave people with a bad taste. NTUC should review the redundancy package of companies operating in Singapore and ensure compliance to good labour practices like removal of anti compete clauses. The other area to be looked at is at least 14 days annual leave for all employees. A well rested worker is a productive, efficient and efficient one. Training and reskilling should be partnership with employee and employers and funds be flexible for employees to reskilled and trained.
