Issue 6, Brakpan's Voice. In the last couple of weeks, I have been part of several projects. Through it all, two things were highlighted. Team spirit and cooperation. We can have all the numbers we want, but if we do not work together, then numbers are irrelevant. Numbers can split, it can divide and even be subtracted, and the project gets lost in hurt and confusion. If we do not act like one loaf of bread, we can not defeat the enemy. Parent asked you to do something, you said no. Well, you're still doing it. Is that how we were raised? Yes or no? Could we have accidentally done this at some point in our lives as a parent already? Yes or no? And they just learned that if somebody's important, if I care about somebody, you never say, So some of you go, well, how do I reverse this? You go back and say, Hey, I at times have given you commands and presented them as questions. Totally unfair of me. I shouldn't have. I should have had a command to command and a question to question. So from now on, if I ever ask you a yes or no, you are safe to say yes or no and I will honor your answer. GOOD NEWS TO SHARE: MY NIECE ESME GREGSON AND THE BROWNIES SUPPORT COMMUNITY CAUSES. I am very proud to share this news and proud of my niece, and also to share such a story about both children supporting benevolent missions and the power of the voluntary and community sectors and those who help them. When we look back at this past year for example there have been very difficult and tragic events, but there has also been much progress on many worthy and noble causes. I would put the case that it is equally necessary to highlight bad practices and failures as it is to highlight good practices and achievements. When for example there is any failure, in any environment, regulatory failure, service delivery, safeguarding or employment, etc hen we must call out wrongdoing to ensure positive change. In reply to one question asked of me recently, I spend more time writing compliments and commendations for good service than I do reporting failures and complaints, ranging from family healthcare appointments, business, services or indeed anything I firmly believe is just as important to feedback compliments, as it is to report complaints and failings. Within schools and others caring for children, support networks, education, intervention, and prevention of for example bullying is very different from what I experienced and witnessed at school. Statutory safeguarding obligations and procedures that I (and many others) would also wish to see extended to adults in all environments including workplaces. One of my published stories in the Short Kid Stories magazine, which can be read online was inspired by my niece, entitled "Esme, and The Magic Cat", as an author of children's stories I always like to share the knowledge that children books, especially those for younger readers must tell moral stories, basically good has to win over evil, that is why the original "superheroes" were created, to teach children moral lessons and give role models. The parable that I remember talking about with my niece a couple of years ago is so universally relevant, it's about bullies losing their power to bully and those exposed as fakes and frauds, and the children's story we were reading at the time gave one of the best examples relevant to all ages, "The Emperor Without His Clothes,", it was brilliant, I couldn't have summed it up it any better. My personal philanthropy has a primary focus on the human rights of children and young people. Which is understandable when you hear my own story of childhood abuse and neglect. I strongly believe that every child deserves to be loved, safe and able to thrive, no matter where they were born. I also believe that this is the responsibility of the whole community - not just the biological parents. That is why I chose to apply to be a Trustee for Hope and Homes for Children and it was an absolute honour to be selected for this huge responsibility. As such, I have had the privilege to see the positive results of their incredible work, but there is so much more to be done. Sadly, at least 5.4million children are currently separated from their families, shut away inside orphanages, and staggeringly 80% are not even orphans. Orphanages are not the safe place we have been led to believe by decades of well meaning charity work and philanthropy. It is well researched and demonstrated that orphanages expose children to abuse, trafficking, and physical and psychological trauma that can last a lifetime. 📖🔬here is just one study https://lnkd.in/ejxvhEk7 No child should end up in an orphanage. There is ALWAYS a better solution. Today is the UN #InternationalDayofFamilies and this marks the launch of HHC’s campaign #BacktoFamily.
