February is Heart month and yesterday we had the pleasure of attending the Executive Women’s Alliance meeting where we heard from Lisa Finley with the American Heart Association. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and remember that they vary between men and women! 👉 chest discomfort 👉Shortness of breath 👉 Jaw, neck, or upper back pain 👉 Fainting 👉 Nausea or vomiting As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women may experience other symptoms that are typically less associated with heart attack, such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Learn the signs of heart attack and, even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out. Minutes matter. Fast action can save lives – maybe your own. #thewoodlands #thewoodlandstx #grandopening #dpc #medicalmembership #conciergedoctor #directprimarycare #primarycare #shenandoah #doctor #physician #drsteelman #twtx #internalmedicine #boardcertified #topdoc #willsteelman #weightloss #dpcmedicine #doctorlifestyle #woodlands #woodlandstx #aesthetic #texasdoctors #montgomerycounty #moco #ghwcc #woodlandstx #bestofthewoodlands #drsteelman

This is so important: When to act and when to watch.
As a physician we take the Hippocratic Oath which contains the words "Into whatsoever houses I enter, I will enter to help the sick, and I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm" As doctors we want to act, to cure, to be active in our treatments. Medications and treatments are not without side effects. In avoiding all wrong-doing and harm this MUST include avoidance of unnecessary treatment or embarking on paths with little chance of success. Sometimes the only thing that will help is time and letting the body heal. Many young (and senior) physicians would do well to remember that sometimes the best thing we can do is sit on our hands and "let time heal all wounds".

In the hustle of the ER, patient-centered care remains paramount. This was a trauma case where the patient, post-road traffic accident, presented with a deep laceration over the left supraorbital region. Employing a layered closure technique, my focus was on restoring not just the anatomy but also meeting the patient's needs. Every case reinforces the commitment to delivering the best possible care. #ERdiaries #PatientOutcomes #TraumaCare

Words matter. A lot. It's not always easy to talk about wounds, let alone call them the "right" thing. To one clinician it's a Decubitus Ulcer. To another it's a Pressure Injury. To another it's a Pressure Ulcer. To a patient it's a bedsore. Or a red spot. Or an area that looks bad. Or a thing that won't get better. Or a something concerning, but not sure what. It's also someone's life. Whatever we call it, remembering to meet patients where they are is always the right move. The words matter. The patient matters more. Make sure we get or give the care we need by understanding the patient, not getting hung up on the "right" terms.

When it comes to treating strokes, timing is everything. At 47, Amanda Sparks experienced her second stroke in 10 years. As soon as her symptoms started showing, she and her husband knew it was a race against the clock. Thankfully, in less than five hours, our team at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center was able to remove the dangerous blood clot successfully. This amazing feat was made possible by technology and teamwork. By leveraging tech that rapidly sends information to doctors and constantly optimizes medical team coordination to minimize treatment time, our team at Novant Health was able to save every one of Amanda's brain cells. At Novant Health, we are always working to deploy the strategies and technology that support timely and effective care. We understand how scary these situations can be and want to bring you peace of mind as quickly as possible. #Healthcare #PatientExperience #DigitalTransformation #Innovation #StrokeAwarenessMonth
