Death rates in January and February have been unusually low! Year to date mortality is tracking 2019, the best year on record. Obviously things can change - 2020 and 2022 also started well but didn't finish that way (with 2020 taking a dramatic turn for the worse!) Of course, ideally we would hope and expect that death rates in 2024 would be lower than 2019, given five years for mortality to improve. But in light of the pandemic, death rates year-to-date are about as low as could realistically be hoped for.

Some good news as we head into the Easter weekend, as mortality rates for 2024 continue to be below the 10-year average (1.7% below at the time of writing). It will be interesting to see how the Continuous Mortality Investigation allow for this apparent return to normality when they confirm their default approach to the CMI 2023 mortality projection model - expected next month.

Mortality rates for 2024 (solid black line) continue to be remarkably similar to 2019 (solid yellow line). A very complex area, but are we potentially seeing a return to pre-pandemic normality? The latest weekly update from the always excellent Continuous Mortality Investigation is available below: https://lnkd.in/dAPkjGme
